Weekend Wrap Up

We had a productive weekend with gorgeous weather.  We donated some furniture we no longer needed.  We gave Victory a bath that she really needed.  This time, she at least was smiling during her bath, but she still wanted out of the tub!  Doug (along with Victory who loves to go in the car), came with me to pick out flowers and plants.  We planted flowers and plants; and I planted flowers in flower boxes and planters.  This was my first time ‘gardening.’  Doug (I assisted) put together some patio furniture.  Thankfully, Doug is really good at this sort of endeavor and he has so much patience.  We sat out on our deck last night and read for the first time.  It was really peaceful and Victory seemed to like being outside with us — she meandered around and then she eventually sat beside us.  So far, Victory would rather lay on the deck than in her Orvis outdoor bed!  We are looking forward to spending more evenings outside!

Happy Monday!

Home Inspiration

Doug and I moved into our new home about eight months ago — the time has really flown by.  At that time, we bought some new furniture for the house since we have more space, but we also wanted to be in the house a little bit to get a sense of the space and how we wanted the space to look and feel.  As such, we have been slowly decorating.

Over the weekend, we picked up our new end tables and coffee table for our family room from Doug’s parents’ house.  Doug told me long ago that he always wanted these pieces of furniture in our house someday as they were hand-made by a family relative and they also were in Doug’s Grandma Rose’s apartment.  Doug’s Mom found a local furniture finisher  and we selected a stain and had the three pieces of furniture refinished.  The mid-century furniture turned out really nice and we received these pieces of furniture as an early gift, which, thankfully made it back to our home without any problems due to Doug’s careful loading and packing of the cars!  (Victory did well on the trip).

I have been looking around for some accent chairs to order at some point for our family room, living room, and my office.  Below, are some accent chairs that I found that might work!  I like solid colors — clean and simple.

We still have a few walls remaining that are in need of some decorating that we are working on as well!

Happy Thursday!

Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

“Live life as if everything is rigged in your favor.” ~Rumi

It is often times feels scary to go outside of your comfort zone, but it is necessary.  I think it is really true that you must move out of your comfort zone and try new things.  This is how we grow and realize our dreams.  That is what I am doing with my photography project, which is beginning to take some shape after a lot of time and hard work.  It is new territory and, at times, overwhelming, but very much worth it, and I want to see this project and vision through to its completion (there is still much work to complete).  I think in life you must be willing to take risks, go outside your comfort zone, and share your work.  I am not sure what will come of this project, but I know that sometimes you just have to have faith and trust that you end up where you are meant to be with your work, while trusting in the process, if you are willing to keep working at it and showing up each day.  Trust is my word for this year, and I am working on having more trust.  I look forward to sharing this project once it is completed.

Additionally, I also found this short TED Talk video by Elizabeth Gilbert, writer, really helpful.

Happy creating!

Victory: Mother’s Day

I had a nice Mother’s Day with little Victory and Doug!  We spent the day together and Doug made us breakfast, malted waffles, and Victory had some vanilla yogurt along with a few pieces of waffle!  She gave me a really cute card and a pair of Toms, which are extremely light-weight and comfortable slip-ons, which are great for summer!  (Victory told me that she wanted to get me Toms with doggie friends printed on them, but so far Toms does not have any available so she is keeping her eyes out!)  We also went to dinner together at one of my favorites places, the Iron Hill Brewery, located in Delaware!  We also managed to go to the dog park, one of Victory’s favorite places!  We found some great light on Sunday and decided to take some impromptu photos of us together shown below to commemorate our first Mother’s Day together!  I love our little Victory so much and we are very grateful that she is a part of our family and I am so happy to be her Mama!  I know that Biscuit is always with us.

The Importance of Handwritten Notes

We were taught to write thank you notes.  Today, it seems too easy with our electronic devices to just send off a note or a thank you note or post a note to social media.  However, I believe, a handwritten note means so much more and, after all, everyone likes to receive ‘good mail.’  I have kept all the notes and cards Doug has sent and given to me over the years and have them stored away for safe keeping along with the photo albums I have made over the years and continue to make.  For instance, I have cards Doug sent me when we started dating and cards and post cards that he sent to me when he traveled abroad.  I am so happy that I have kept these.  We even used to send each other cards on the eleventh of every month in our early years of dating — perhaps we should write each other more cards and notes more often for no particular reason!  I have also kept various cards and notes that people have sent and given me.  I like the idea of being able to look back at these tangible cards — there seems to be so much more permanency with a handwritten note.  Since I love paper so much, I enjoy making our Holiday card, which Doug proofs for me!

I keep stamps, address labels, cards, and stationery stocked in my desk drawers so it is optimal for me to write notes and thank you notes!  Here are some places that I like to purchase cards and stationery:  PapyrusQuotable CardsRifle Paper Co.; Trader Joe’s; and Etsy — there are many independent artists that make unique cards.  Sometimes, while out and about, I find a set of cards I really like.  I also really like to use custom stamps and stickers!  I purchase custom stickers made by Moo; and I purchase custom stamps made by Zazzle.

So, why wait for a special occasion to send someone a handwritten note or thank you note!

Happy Writing!

The Power of Sleep

Doug and I have a regular schedule during the week of going to bed early, and Victory is very much involved in our night-time ritual, which includes our final walk before heading up to bed where Victory climbs the stairs and jumps on the bed and gives us tons of kisses before finally settling down to go to sleep resting in between the head board and one of our heads!

I know that I feel so much better when I get enough sleep.  I try to get around seven to eight hours of sleep a night.  I am able to think more clearly, be more productive, and I overall feel better.  If I do not get enough sleep, I am tired, agitated, unable to concentrate, and it takes me twice as long to do a task, and I am prone to making mistakes.  Hopefully, enough sleep and daily exercise will keep us healthy and well!

Arianna Huffington talks about the importance of sleep in this brief Ted Talk video.  Arianna Huffington also has a new book out, Thrive, where she discusses the four pillars in her book: well-being; wisdom; wonder; and giving.

Happy Tuesday!

For Furry Family Members: Dyson Animal DC 50

Recently, our Dyson DC 24 broke, and was deemed defective.  We had received the DC 24 as a wedding gift from Bed Bath and Beyond prior to meeting Biscuit and Victory.  So, we needed to get a new vacuum for our house.  After calling Dyson, to my surprise, Dyson told me that we could return our DC 24  for a credit towards a new Dyson vacuum!  So, since the DC 24 is no longer available, the most comparable Dyson vacuum that is now sold is the Animal DC 50.  So, we opted for the Animal DC 50!  This vacuum is great!  It is compact for going up and down stairs; it is multi-purpose — it works on hardwood floors, tile, rugs, and carpet; it is much more quiet; has a longer cord for vacuuming stairs; and it is smoother to use!  The Animal DC 50 is great and it picks up all of Victory’s sheltie furs really well!  So, if you have furry family members, I highly recommend the Animal DC 50, if you are in need of a new vacuum — it works like an animal!

Happy Monday!

Meeting New Sheltie Friends!

Over the weekend, we took Victory for the first time to meet some sheltie friends at the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., which is the rescue where we adopted our precious Biscuit, and the rescue organization that played a vital role in facilitating Victory’s adoption!  (We also previously took Biscuit to meet the other shelties at the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., which you can view here.)  Victory had a great time and the weather was beautiful!  Victory did stay close by my side; and she got ‘humped’ again a few times — the male doggie friends are quite attracted to her as this is not the first time this has happened!  Nevertheless, Victory loved sniffing and meeting the other sheltie friends!

There are a few shelties still in need of new homes, which I will share more information about soon!

Twist, the Sheltie/American Eskimo dog, shown below, loved playing fetch with Doug!  However, Twist also loved to hang onto the ball, as you can see below!  Twist is full of energy and wore poor Doug out!  Twist is also literally a jumping bean, shown below!

Victory: Dog in a Cup

Earlier this year I interviewed Eleonor Boström, an artist living and working in Berlin, Germany.  I love Eleonor’s work, especially her Dog in a Cup series.  As such, I commissioned Eleonor to make one of our little golden Victory!  Last week, Victory’s Dog in a Cup arrived to us all the way from Berlin, Germany!  I love little Victory’s Dog in a Cup, which is now displayed in our china cabinet among our other treasures, which sits besides the Biscuit totem; the Cheetah and Panda totem; and our family heart totem.  Eleonor was wonderful to work with!  Thank you so much, Eleonor, we love your work!

Happy Monday!

Victory: Together

Below are a couple of images of Victory and I at the dog park!  She loves to be held on my hip — she truly is our furbaby!  Victory continues to gain more confidence each day and her sheltie furs keep coming in, which is great!  She absolutely loves the dog park, and we usually go to the dog park at least once a week, in addition to our daily walks in the neighborhood, since she loves to go mingle with other doggies at the dog park!  This weekend Victory is meeting new sheltie friends for the first time!  We are sure that she will have a grand time!

Happy Friday and Happy Easter!
