Biscuit at Lowes

Since the weather has been so cold, Doug and I have been limited on where we can take Biscuit for some outings, which Biscuit greatly enjoys.  Since Lowes was such a hit with Biscuit several weeks ago, we decided to take Biscuit back to Lowes in Elkridge.  This time, I brought along my camera!  Biscuit was such a happy boy and he received many compliments!  Below are some photographs of Biscuit enjoying an outing to Lowes!

We skipped the gym last night and took Biscuit to Lowes again as he needed a “morale boost!”  As soon as he entered through the sliding doors at Lowes, he began to smile.  We walked up and down the aisles looking at all sorts of items for our new house!  Biscuit was smiling and he was so happy to be out and about!  We stopped at Chick-fil-A on the way home for some vanilla ice cream, which Biscuit loved!  We know that Biscuit misses our former house and neighborhood.  We know that he will be much happier in the new neighborhood and our new house once it is finished being built as there will be lots of doggie friends and new smells!  If only we could tell him this!

We also took Biscuit with us to get pizza earlier this week  to get him out and about.  Doug and I sat outside in chilly weather eating our pizza; however,  Biscuit did not seem to mind and he was quite content to be out and about pawing incessantly for more of his prescription kibble!

Biscuit is a reminder of how something so small, such as going to Lowes, makes him so happy!  We hope that spring is on its way soon so we can take Biscuit on more adventures!

Featured: Biscuit’s Dog Rescue Story and Katherine Carver Photography

I am happy and honored to report that Biscuit’s rescue story along with some of my photographs have recently been featured in Pretty Fluffy!  It is my hope that people will read Biscuit’s story and see Biscuit’s genuine happiness exuded in the photographs, which will lead more people to strongly consider adopting a rescue dog or shelter dog.  There are so many dogs and animals in need of furever homes.  Biscuit’s story is inspiring and provides hope and possibilities for all.  You can read the entire feature here!

Biscuit’s Excursion to the Naval Academy and Downtown Annapolis!

The weather here this past weekend was gorgeous!  Doug and I decided to take Biscuit on an outing since the weather was so nice outside.  Biscuit had a great time and his spirits were immediately lifted.  We think that Biscuit is a bit tired of the colder temperatures preventing him from going on outdoor adventures!  In any event, Biscuit had a wonderful time.  Below are a few photographs of Biscuit at the Naval Academy and Biscuit sauntering around downtown Annapolis — Biscuit even sat on the State Capitol building!  Enjoy!

A Happy Hello from Biscuit!

Below is a photograph of little Biscuit sniffing around  just as it began snowing.  If you look closely, you can see some of the small snowflakes on Biscuit’s fur coat!

Biscuit is doing well.  He recently began taking his thyroid medicine as he has been diagnosed with an under active thyroid.  In addition to his thyroid medicine, Biscuit currently takes the following medicine/supplements daily –medicine for his kidneys; medicine for his ear; Glycoflex, a joint supplement for his arthritis; Wellactin, a nutritional supplement; and Royal Canin prescription food.  Biscuit loves his Greenies Pill Pockets that we use to give him his medicine/supplements!  At times, Biscuit has taken to even picking out the pills and supplements out of his Greenies, in order to get more Greenies!  We take Biscuit back to the vet in a month for blood work and urinalysis to check all of his levels.  Doug and I strive to be diligent and stay on top of all of Biscuit’s medical needs to ensure he gets the best medical care.

Biscuit seems to have more energy than usual, and he is even running/galloping at times! — perhaps it is due to the new thyroid medicine he is taking!

Happy Friday!

Biscuit’s Reign as the Orvis Petfinder Commitment Dog Comes to a Sweet End

We recently received this wonderful package, pictured below, from Orvis as a thank you to Biscuit for serving and representing the 2012 Orvis Petfinder Commitment, promoting dog rescue.  Biscuit was the first dog to represent this important Orvis-Petfinder Commitment.  Fortunately, Biscuit, through his image, has helped promote dog rescue and, as a result, Orvis is renewing its relationship with the Petfinder Foundation with another Orvis Customer Matching Grant!  (Please read further information below).

Biscuit, along with us, has certainly enjoyed being part of this journey and he is looking forward to his visit to Vermont at the Orvis Flagship store this May!

Thank you Orvis for the thoughtful gifts that you sent to Biscuit!  Most of all, thank you Orvis for selecting Biscuit to be a part of this important cause.

Dear Ms. Carver,

On behalf of Orvis and Petfinder Foundation, I’d like to thank you and Biscuit for being such an important visual element of our promotional campaign in 2012.  I’m happy to report that the campaign was very popular with our customers and easily surpassed our fundraising goals, all to benefit Petfinder Foundation.  As a result, Orvis will be renewing its relationship with Petfinder Foundation with another Orvis Customer Matching Grant in 2013.  To launch our new matching funds campaign for 2013, we have decided to update our presentation, using another photo of rescue dogs submitted to us through our catalog cover contest, just as you did last year.  This time, we are blessed with the story of two dogs – Becca and Tolle – whose friendship began thanks to Petfinder!  I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a wonderful story, just as Biscuit’s story is, and an appropriate fresh start for our 2013 campaign. (http://www.orvis.com/intro.aspx?subject=9847 ).

We thank you for being part of the family with us in 2012 and for your devoted support of Orvis and the Petfinder Foundation.

Kindest Regards,

Bill Eyer, Orvis

Dear Everyone at Orvis:

On behalf of Biscuit, we would like to say thank you for the gifts that you sent to Biscuit that we received the other night.  It was very thoughtful and generous of you to think of Biscuit.  He will enjoy his new toys!  Thank you.  (Some photographs are shown below).

We are honored that Biscuit was selected to be a part of the Orvis Petfinder.com Commitment supporting and promoting dog rescue.  We are happy that we were able to share Biscuit with the world as part of this important Commitment.  It is our hope that Biscuit’s story helped inspire others to consider dog rescue.  We are very happy to hear that this campaign has been renewed for 2013!

Sincerely yours,

Katie, Doug & Biscuit

Another Biscuit Sighting!

This weekend while I was out grocery shopping at Wegmans located in Columbia, Maryland, I decided to look and see if there were any Jones Soda Co. bottles featuring Biscuit.  To my delight, I found two bottles of Biscuit shown below!  Each time Doug and I are out grocery shopping, we usually stop and check for Jones Soda Co. bottles featuring Biscuit.  We have gathered about thirty-five bottles of Biscuit to date (with the help of friends)!  Although, we have given bottles away to family and friends as a nice memento!

If anyone finds any Jones Soda bottles featuring Biscuit, please send me a photograph and a description of where you found the Jones Soda Co. bottles featuring Biscuit and I will feature it on this blog!  Thank you and happy hunting!

A Groomed Biscuit!

Biscuit just got groomed this past weekend and he is looking great!  Below are a few photographs of Biscuit going for another winter walk this past weekend!

Biscuit began his thyroid medicine this week to help with his under active thyroid.  We took Biscuit to the vet again for a follow-up appointment earlier this week and his ear infection is gone; however, Biscuit has an inflamed left ear with polyps.  As a result, we are trying new ear drops along with cleaning his ear daily in the hopes of reducing the inflammation in his left ear.  The vet suggested that if this course of treatment does not prove successful, we should schedule a consult with a dermatologist to seek alternatives to treat his left ear.  (Biscuit’s left ear has always had issues since we rescued him due to a ruptured ear drum in his left ear which he had when he was initially taken to the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. after being found on the streets of North Carolina.)

Otherwise, Biscuit is in great spirits — he is giving us his paw, a high-five, all the time in exchange for his prescription kibble (used as treats)!  Biscuit still enjoys his walks and, at times, he even gallops, which is the equivalent of running for Biscuit!

We think that Biscuit looks more attractive than the 2013 Best of Breed Shetland Sheepdog — I know, we are biased!

The Importance of Archival Digital Photo Papers

Printing your digital photos on archival paper will help to ensure that your treasured photographs do not fade or change colors over time.  You will need a printer or a quality photo lab that produces prints on acid-free archival paper using archival quality inks.  Along with archival paper, you will want to choose a quality pigment ink for your printer to get a print that will last, presuming that you are not using a quality photo lab for your photographic printing.

Matte and fine art papers typically offer the greatest archival stability compared to other papers, with image permanence often approaching — or even exceeding — 100 years with pigment inks.  In addition, I prefer matte papers because I do not care for the reflective sheen of semi-gloss and luster papers.

The term “fine art” seems to imply that only great works of art can be printed on these papers, but, of course, that is not the case.  Fine art papers are often thicker and heavier than plain matte papers, with a variety of surface textures including smooth, satin, velvet and watercolor.  As a rule, they are more expensive than regular matte papers, and sometimes considerably more.  Matte papers are the best choice when you want an economical paper with the smoothest surface and the best photographic output.  Choose fine art papers when you want the texture of the surface to lend a certain characteristic to the print, or you simply want the paper to feel more luxurious in a potential customer’s hands.

For conservation purposes, it is important that you use archival printing and archival papers to ensure the longevity of your photographs.  Additionally, it is just as important that you take great care of your photographs in order to preserve your photographs.

I really like the following archival digital photo papers: (1) Hahnemühle Photo Rag archival photo paper; (2) the Crane Museo archival photo paper; and (3) the Somerset Velvet paper.  Images printed on these archival digital photo papers literally look like ‘works of art.’

Below is a Matte Fine Art Paper Comparison Chart

Paper Surface Texture Color Color Weight
Enhanced Matte smooth soft white 192 gsm
Legion Photo Matte smooth bright white 230 gsm
Red River Polar Matte smooth bright white 225 gsm
Hahnemühle Photo Rag smooth soft white 188gsm                     308 gsm
Brightcube Eclipse Satine Bright White (also available in soft white) satin bright white 190gsm                   300 gsm
Hawk Mountain Merlin smooth soft white 255 gsm
Crane Museo/LexJet Soft Fine Art/Red River Polar Art smooth soft white 250 gsm
