Dog: The Universal Language

After visiting Quebec City, a French-speaking territory, during our recent vacation, we realized that no matter what language someone speaks, everyone can relate to a dog/chien!  Many people, total strangers, came up to us to meet Victory!  Even though we do not speak French (Doug knows more French than I do), everyone can relate to a furry family member!  Many people commented to us that they loved the Ergo Performance Carrier and others wanted to take a photo of Victory in her Ergo Carrier — and they could not believe that she liked her Ergo Carrier!  For those whom we could not understand what he/she was saying to us in French, we could understand “Beau Chien!”

We rarely meet other shelties while we are out and about with Victory.  However, during our first visit to Quebec City, we met a native Quebec sheltie named, Choco, a male, tri-colored sheltie, shown below!  Victory and Choco met giving each other some sniffs and kisses, and the Ergo Carrier came in handy — otherwise, Victory would have been quite overwhelmed!  Choco’s parents were so happy to meet Victory, even though we could not understand most of what they were saying — we could discern their excitement and enthusiasm to meet our fur girl!

Additionally, shown below, is a very short iphone video of our fluffy girl in motion during our vacation!

Happy Wednesday!

Victory: Video 3

In addition to photographing Victory on a regular basis, I also want to make videos of Victory, and my goal is to make one video a month to preserve memories with our beloved Victory!  This video of Victory was taken at the lake!  She is beaming and smiling ear to ear!  Victory absolutely loves the water!  You can also watch other videos of Victory here and here.

Victory is all ready to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday — she just has to wrap her gifts up for her Daddy!  Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Friday!

Victory: Video 2

In addition to photographing Victory on a regular basis, I also want to make videos of Victory, and my goal is to make one video a month to preserve memories with our beloved Victory!  This video of Victory was taken at the dog park!  She is beaming and smiling ear to ear as she walks around the dog park!  Victory absolutely loves going to the dog park (including the car ride to the dog park), and she loves to sniff and she especially likes the large dogs!  You can also watch the first video of Victory here.

Happy Friday!

Victory: Video Debut

I recently decided to make my first video (with music) of our little Victory, shown below!  I often wish that I had made videos of our precious Biscuit.  I only have one video of our Biscuit just prior to his final surgery.  However, I am grateful for all the images we have of our beloved Biscuit.  In addition to my other series on the blog, it is my intention to make one video per month and share the videos here on the blog with all of you!  (Perhaps with more practice, the videos will get more sophisticated!)  The video below of our precious Victory is short and low key of her sitting on the sofa, but you will see what a sweet and gentle soul she is along with her true beauty shinning through!  Don’t you love her one floppy ear!  She also often likes  to sit with her front paws under her tummy!  To date, we still have not heard her bark!

You can view the video of Victory by clicking on the arrow in the video below or alternatively you can click here.

Happy Thursday!

Happy Birthday, Nick!

Today is Nick’s birthday and he turns seven, we think!  Nick, as most of you might know who have been following the blog, is my parents’ rescue papillon mix dog!  My parents adopted Nick in August of 2011.  In our family, we celebrate our furry family members’ birthdays!  This year, we got Nick an Orvis bed for his birthday, shown below, that we purchased during our trip to Vermont with Biscuit this past spring.  Last year, we got Nick an embroidered sweater for his birthday!

We just could not let Nick be without an Orvis bed since Biscuit loved his Orvis beds so much!  We have three Orvis beds, and Victory is currently sleeping with us each night and she has not yet shown interest in her Orvis beds or her new duvet!  In time, we hope that she will want to use her beds at some point when she feels comfortable!

When we were in Michigan last month, to rescue and adopt Victory, we saw that Nick enjoys sitting and sleeping on his Orvis bed, shown below, which is situated right next to his Daddy — the most important person in Nick’s life!

Nick goes crazy for my Dad when he comes home and especially when my Dad asks Nick if he wants to go “bye-bye!” Nick’s eyes light up and Nick barks and he jumps up and down with pure excitement and genuine love for his Daddy!  Nick is really adorable as shown in this video shown immediately below where my Dad asks Nick if he wants to go “bye-bye!”  (To view the video, click on the arrow on the video).

Happy Birthday, Nick-Nick!

P.S. — Please send positive and healing thoughts to Nick.  Recently and shortly after this above video was made, Nick had an encounter with another dog who came off leash from his owner.  Nick was terrified and in the process Nick got hurt.  Nick went to the vet and he is on pain medicine; however, he hurt his back and he is unable to lift his tail.  He is making progress each day.  We hope soon that Nick will heal up and that he will no longer be in any pain.

Two Years with Biscuit!

Today marks the two-year anniversary with our little Biscuit!  The time has really flown by!  Doug and I cannot imagine our lives without Biscuit.  Biscuit has really helped us in so many ways.  Our lives have been enriched ten-fold!

Biscuit came to us after being found on the streets of North Carolina malnourished, covered in urine, with a non-existent fur coat, and a ruptured ear drum.  Soon after being found on the street, Biscuit was taken to a sheltie rescue, Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., located in Frederick County, Maryland.  We first met Biscuit on December 24, 2010, and decided to adopt him on the spot.  However, because Doug and I had a trip planned over the Holiday, we could not pick Biscuit up and take him home until January 7, 2011.

When we first brought Biscuit to our house, he was very scared, and he would not leave his bed.  Biscuit did not know the term, “potty,” but he quickly learned.  (Biscuit still does not know his name, as it was given to him at the sheltie rescue, but he does fortunately know, “potty!”)

Doug and I had never had a dog before, so we decided to do dog training for several months with Holly Wallace, Your Spot Dog Training.  This helped us get acclimated to having a new dog and Biscuit loved getting dog treats as a reward for his efforts!  Biscuit now gives us the paw all the time indicating that he wants more kibble!

With time, Biscuit began to trust us, and he really liked (and still likes) his routine and predictable schedule.  He never misses a beat — he knows when it is dinner time!  We think that he has a little alarm go off in the early evening for dinner!

Biscuit has made more trips to Dr. Calvert, our vet, than we would like.  We have to monitor his kidneys via blood work and urinalysis; and about every quarter, Biscuit has an ear infection — fortunately, the medicine clears up his ear infections.  Due to Biscuit’s ruptured ear drum in his left ear, he is prone to ear infections.  Luckily, Biscuit seems to be in really good spirits these days and his health is not worsening.  Biscuit is actually running outside on his walks these days and we found out that Biscuit loves the snow!  Perhaps his joint supplements for his arthritis in his legs are working!

Biscuit has been able to travel everywhere with us.  He has been to Nova Scotia two times already!  Fortunately, Biscuit travels well in the car.  All of our trips are planned around little Biscuit.  Doug spends a lot of time researching accommodations to ensure that Biscuit has a fun and safe trip!  Our trips are always better with Biscuit!

We are proud of Biscuit.  He has really come so far in a short period of time.  He has gone from a “street dog” to becoming an ambassador for Orvis representing the Petfinder Commitment; he is an Orvis Cover Dog and centerfold; and he is on the Green Apple Jones Soda Co. bottle!

Biscuit has been an inspiration to me to start photographing again.  He is my muse; and sometimes I really think he knows what a camera is!  We are so blessed to have Biscuit!  Please consider rescuing and adopting an animal today!

Below is a video commemorating Biscuit’s two-year anniversary with us!  We  hope for many more wonderful years with Biscuit!
