Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. — Part IV – Rescue dogs in need of furever homes

I am excited about a long-term Dog Photography Project that I am working on with the Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter (BARCS) and other dog rescue organizations such as the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.  Since Biscuit was a sheltie, I felt that we needed to include a sheltie rescue in this project in Biscuit’s honor.  I hope to share further information in the future.  You can view Part I;  Part II; and Part III.

For now, I can share some color photographs of these doggies pictured below in the hopes that they receive furever homes!  If you are interested in adopting any of these dogs pictured below, please contact the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. for further information.  Please consider dog rescue!  Biscuit’s story illustrates that we can make a positive difference and impact in one dog’s life.

Brief Description of the dogs in the order they are pictured below.

1. Maggie — is a retriever and chow mix who is 15 years old.  Maggie is blind and she has some arthritis, and she has a very calm disposition.  She loves one-on-one attention.  Maggie is a very sweet and loving dog who is in need of a furever home!

2. Rock-It — is a male sheltie who is 13 years old.  Rock-It is a special, gentle sheltie with a wonderful calm disposition who loves one-on-one attention who is in need of a furever home!

3. Angel — is a female shelite who is 13 years old, who acts quite young for her age.  Angel is swift on her feet and she loves to run and play!  Angel is in need of a furever home!

4. Spirit — is a male sheltie who is 9 years old.  Spirit is very friendly and playful.  Spirit is not fond of cars, and therefore requires a fenced in backyard.  Spirit is a very playful dog who loves to play who is in need of a furever home!

If you want to adopt a rescue dog; donate money; and/or contribute your time to the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., please contact Carol Guth via telephone at 301-663-0635; or via e-mail at sheltytaxi@aol.com.  To learn more, you can also visit the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.’s website.

Also, during our recent visit to the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., we donated Biscuit’s remaining dog food to this rescue in order to help other sheltie rescue dogs.

Additionally, I photographed Carol Guth’s dogs — who were originally rescue dogs that she adopted as her own dogs — Whisper, Twist, and Jill!  Aren’t they adorable!  Carol is going to use one of these images, shown below, for her 2013 Christmas card!  Carol Guth is the Director of the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.

Featured: Daily Dog Tag: Jax, Photography Commission, Baltimore, Maryland

I am happy and honored to report that one of my photography commissions was recently featured in the Daily Dog Tag!  This feature highlights Jax’s successful dog rescue story along with some of my photographs of Jax from our photography session!  Jax is such a handsome pup!

Jax has found his forever home and he continues to help foster more dogs until they find their own forever homes!  Jax’s Mom, Jen, a woman after my own heart, writes a blog about her adventures in dog fostering, which is narrated by Jax!  You can follow Jen’s blog here!  Jen is a huge proponent of dog fostering, a very important cause, that helps many dog survive and leave shelters.

You can read the entire feature here!

If you are interested in commissions, please find further information here!

Happy Tuesday!

Framing Fine Art Prints

My parents recently framed an archival fine art print from their commission with me of their dog Nick!  They had the archival fine art print framed and matted using archival framing methods similar to museums.  The fine art print that they chose to frame shows Biscuit and Nick together with smiles on their faces waiting for a treat on a beautiful spring day!  The archival framing was completed by JLP Framing located in Baltimore, Maryland.  As a result of using archival print and framing methods, this print will last for many years to come!

Importantly, Biscuit’s memory will be forever be preserved in his Grandma and Grandpa’s home along with many other photographs, including a painting, also shown below, of our little Biscuit.  Of course, Nick’s photographs and painting (that Doug and I had commissioned of Nick as a gift to my parents) also adorns their home!

Doug and I are currently working on ideas to commemorate and honor Biscuit.  We know for certain that we will have some fine art archival prints of Biscuit and our family made, which we will have framed and matted to display in our new forthcoming home.  We have some other ideas in mind as well to commemorate and honor our Biscuit.

You can read further information on how to preserve your photographs here.

Our Sweet Dear Biscuit

Our Sweet Dear Biscuit

Your Daddy and I cannot thank you enough for all of the unconditional love, joy, and light you have brought into our lives.  You have opened my heart in ways that I never imagined.  I have you to thank for teaching me so many things and, most of all, you have taught me so much about myself.  You have truly been a gift in our lives.  Even though we have only had a short two and half years together, we lived as if we had thirty years together.  You were always an integral part of our lives.  We experienced many adventures and wonderful moments together in a short period of time.  I am grateful for our special and unique relationship and bond, link no other.

Our lives were truly enriched by you.  You always made everything better.   All of  our trips and outings were made so much better because of you!  One of my favorites times with you was going to Hubbards Beach in Nova Scotia!  We drove two times with you all the way up to Nova Scotia, and you always traveled so well!  You loved the beach!  You ran on the sand on the beach as though you did not have arthritis.  As you know, two of your photographs from Hubbards Beach were featured — one on the Jones Soda Co. bottles; and you (and your image) also represented the Orvis Petfinder Commitment promoting dog rescue along with being an Orvis Cover Dog Winner!  You are truly an inspiration for dog rescue!  We also loved traveling to Vermont with you, which ended up being our last trip together.  You went to the Orvis Flagship store; and we got to go atop Mount Equinox with you!  I will never forget these moments that we shared with you.  Also, if it were not for you, your Uncle Nick would not have been rescued!  You also brought wonderful people into our lives that we would not have met otherwise because of meeting you.

We loved pushing you around in your Hound About during our trips and outings together!  You always were so excited with your tail wagging and smiling when we pulled out your Hound About and assembled it together for a walk!  Whether that was for a walk around the Harbor or a stroll around downtown Halifax you always received countless compliments on your handsome looks — you are, afterall, the most handsome sheltie dog ever!

I always enjoyed coming home and being greeted by you.  You were always happy to see me and you always were ready for your afternoon walk and dinner!  You loved dinner time!  I loved how you always used your paw to receive more treats/kibble — one of your trademarks.  I had a little custom-made totem to always keep on display of you raising your little paw!  I also had a heart totem made to commemorate our family.  It took a few months for you to adjust to living with us in your new home; and I will never forget the first time you raised your paw to connect with us for the first time while sitting on your bed in the living room — this was the first visible sign that you felt comfortable with us.  Of course, you quickly learned that all you had to do was raise your paw and you got you more treats/kibble!

I have so many wonderful memories of our outings together as well as our quiet moments together.  I always enjoyed your company and companionship, especially in the mornings while I got ready; and during the evenings when I worked late on the computer.  You were always by my side.  I miss your smile; your big and clear brown eyes; the sound of your nails hitting the hardwood floors as you followed us around the house; and your licks and kisses before bed each night.  I miss holding you in my arms — especially when we took car rides together.  I miss our daily walks together.  I will always have my memories of our time together.  Your image is firmly imprinted in my mind and heart.

I am so thankful and grateful for you.  Thank you for being my muse.  You brought photography back into my life post law school.  I had no idea how much I really need my photography in my life.  Thank you for this wonderful gift.  I cannot thank you enough.

We love you so much and you will never leave our hearts.  I hope that you knew how much you mean to us, which cannot truly be expressed in words.  I am certain, when the time is right, that you will bring another furry friend into our lives who needs a furever home like yourself.  I am so happy that we traveled on this journey together with you and that we were able to witness your wonderful transformation from a very sad and extremely timid dog living on the streets of North Carolina to a handsome, confident, loyal, and loving companion.  We witnessed you blossom into our little Biscuit who captured our hearts!  Our little felt family, displayed in our home, will always be a reminder of our wonderful time together.  Your painting will also always be displayed in our home.  Most importantly, you will always be a part of our family.

Thank you for everything, our little Biscuit.  You were a gift to us.  This blog, named after you, will continue in your name and in your honor and memory and it will always remain a constant reminder of the wonderful joy and truly positive impact you have had in our lives.  You will always inspire my photography; and you are the inspiration and the impetus for starting my dog photography project that I am working on which is dedicated to you.  I am so incredibly grateful for our time together.  You are my teacher.  We are both honored to have been your Mamma and Daddy.  Your photographs will always be proudly displayed in our home; your memory will never leave our hearts.  Thank you for all of the joy you brought to us in a short period of time — you are truly a wonderful gift and blessing.  We know that we will see each other again and we know that you are always with us.   We miss you deeply; and we are grateful for you entering our lives at the perfect time.   We love you always and you will always be with us forever.  Each day with you was truly a gift.

Love always,

Mamma & Daddy

Biscuit Met Another Sheltie!

Yesterday, we had a low-key Father’s Day.  In celebration of Father’s Day, Biscuit made a little gift for his Daddy!  Yesterday for brunch, Doug made us malted Belgian waffles and I cut up fresh fruit to top off the waffles!  Doug also made us Cincinnati Chili for dinner!  Doug loves to bake and cook — I am thankful!

We went to check on the status of the house yesterday.  We will get more information on the status and projected completion of the house this week before the drywall goes up — we think we are over half way to completion!  During our visit to the new house, Biscuit met a sheltie, Dean, who lives part-time with a family in the neighborhood.  Dean is much younger, three-years-old, and full of energy — a little too much for Biscuit!  We think they recognized each other as fellow shelties!  Per the neighbor, Biscuit will be the only full-time sheltie resident in the new neighborhood thus far!  This spring Biscuit also met a little female sheltie, Coca!  It is pretty rare to run into other shelties — I am glad that I had my camera with me!  Some photos are shown below!

Happy Monday!

Biscuit My Teacher

For those who have been following my blog know that little Biscuit is our furbaby!  He arrived to live with us on January 7, 2011, after first meeting him and adopting him on December 24, 2010.  Biscuit has literally gone through a swift and wonderful transformation from a very sad and extremely timid dog living on the streets of North Carolina to a confident, loyal, and loving companion who travels with us almost every place we go!  Our lives are so much richer with Biscuit!

Live in the Present

Biscuit does not regret the past or ruminate about the future.  Biscuit lives here, now, and in this moment, responding to whatever is happening around him.  Biscuit reminds me to live in the present and to be present for him.

How much time do we spend in the past or the future?  How much ‘now time’ do we waste by going over what happened yesterday, last week, last month, last year, or by worrying about what might happen tomorrow?  When we do this, we lose some of the precious moments that are happening now because we are really just in our heads most of the time.  Also, the greatest gift to our animals to live in the present with them.  I practice being present with Biscuit each day.

Remember to Play

As humans, I think we forget this.  In our modern and fast-paced world, it seems to be all work and very little play.  Some people forget how to laugh because playtime is not regular enough.

I have learned to play more — especially with Biscuit!  Even though I have work to complete, I do it with a much more relaxed attitude, which is far healthier.

It is also good for the heart.  Playing with a dog generates oxytocin, a hormone that helps reduce stress and promotes happiness.  Overall and all the way around, dogs (animals) really help us in many ways and they enrich our lives!

Our greatest teachers are closer than we think

I now understand why some people say, ‘Did you know that Dog is God spelled backwards?’  I understand it now.   It is so simple, yet profound.

I believe that I have gently and gradually grown in mindfulness and awareness; however, being with Biscuit has led to awakenings in my life during this small segment of time.  Biscuit has been my/our teacher — he has opened my heart to new experiences.  He has taught me to be more present, aware, and patient.  He has also taught me to have more gratitude for the small things in life.  To me, what seems like something very small, makes a huge difference in Biscuit’s  life, impacting his happiness.   Biscuit is also my muse.  I likely have thousands of photos of our little man documenting our time together!  Biscuit came into our lives at the perfect time.  I truly believe that he is meant to be with us — he has truly captured our hearts forever.  I believe animals have a way in teaching us all about ourselves if we are willing to open our hearts and invest in the experience completely.

Howard County, Maryland Photography Commission: Family Photo Shoot

Recently, I had an opportunity to photograph a family who wanted current photographs documenting their family and children.  This family was a pleasure to work with and we were fortunate to have wonderful weather and light!

It is funny how quickly times flies by without even realizing it!  In our family, we had formal portraits taken every year around our birthdays!  (The photographs taken each year at school were always lousy.  Thus, my parents were diligent and hired a photographer take our portraits each year even if we were not so keen on it at the time!)

Some highlights from this photography session are shown below.

If you are interested in commissions, please contact me via e-mail at katie@katherinecarverphotography.com.

Happy Wednesday!
