Victory: Photography Project — 18

“No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does.” ~Chritopher Morley

Beginning in January of this year, I began a weekly photography project with my muse, Victory!  I will continue to share this project on the blog!  I have also been documenting Victory’s milestones so to speak each month — you can read these here!  I think that it is fun to document all of Victory’s changes, while preserving fleeting moments and memories.

As I have mentioned before, our little Victory loves larger dogs!  Below she is pictured at the dog park in the “Large Dog” section trying to get closer to sniff the a larger dog, a mastiff dalmatian mix breed.  So far, the “Large Dog” section of the dog park is working out well, less incidents of ‘humping,’ which occurred frequently with the smaller dogs!

Happy Wednesday!

Victory: Seven Months In

“We dream of a day when humans take responsibility for their actions and realize that dogs are a privilege, not a right.” ~Unknown

Today marks seven months since we adopted our little Victory!  You can read more about the previous months’ milestones here.  The time is just flying by and Victory is blossoming!

Below are some things that we learned about Victory this month:

  • She completed her Level I dog training (and we think that we will enroll in another training class soon)!
  • She went out to eat with us a few times this month and she had a great time, although she is still a little scared walking in parking lots, so we carry her!
  • She went with us to get ice cream for the first time at Ritas!  She did a great job and she loved the vanilla custard (we gave her a few licks)!
  • She had another bath, and she is doing better and tolerating her bath time a little more each time.  She looks so fluffy and feels so soft after a bath!
  • She still loves to chew, and she chewed my scarf to pieces last week that I sat on the bed while I took a shower!  (Now, I know not to set my clothes on the bed in the morning for fear she will chew them!  During these times, I tell her “no chew chew,” (except for when she chews the daylights out of her toys) and then her ears go down and she skirts away, and then I feel badly!)
  • She still loves going to the dog park and since the weather has been so much nicer, we go to the park a couple of times a week with Victory.  She still loves the ‘big dogs’ and she looks so dainty and small in comparison — imagine little Victory looking up and sniffing a Great Dane, which happens often!
  • She loves to put her front paws on the armrest and her back paws on the back seat while in the car when we are driving — she loves going for rides in the car!  (Don’t worry, I hold onto her and she then comes into my lap, and I wish there was a way that I could capture this in the car — she is so, so happy!)
  • She still loves evening walks in her Hound About, which she inherited from her brother, Biscuit!  Everyone in the new neighborhood just smiles when they soon discover a little golden sheltie, Victory, in the Hound About, while we are out for a walk!
  • She recently started to put her head and snout next to my head and face during the night.  Now, I wake up to her little head leaning up against my face each morning!
  • We celebrated our first Mother’s Day together — more on that tomorrow!
  • Her sheltie furs keep coming in and she if filling out well!  (We can’t wait to do a before and after photo at the one year mark, in October!)
  • She still has not barked as of yet!
  • She is still waking us up for her nightly drink of water, despite our efforts — we are still working on this!
  • Most of all, we love her so very much!

If you have not already, be sure to check out the six month video, and our most recent video of our little Victory!  We hope that you have a great day!

Happy Monday!

Victory: Photography Project — 17

“Dogs are our link to paradise.  They don’t know evil … or jealousy … or discontent.  To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring … it was peace.  ~Milan Kundera

On Sundays, Doug makes us a nice breakfast/brunch.  Usually, he makes us malted waffles, pancakes, crepes, or scones with fresh fruit and homemade whip cream!  (Then, we all have to go to the gym and take Victory for a walk outside!)  Victory also likes to be a part of our Sunday breakfast/brunch.  As such, she gets some vanilla yogurt in a bowl!  She loves vanilla yogurt!  We sometimes mix in fruit baby food with her yogurt.  After she is done eating her yogurt, she comes over to each of us looking for us to give her small pieces of waffle, pancakes, and crepes!  We know that we spoil our little Victory, but we would not have it any other way!

Happy Thursday!

“The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not man’s.” ~Mark Twain

Beginning in January of this year, I began a weekly photography project with my muse, Victory! I will continue to share this project on the blog!  I have also been documenting Victory’s milestones so to speak each month — you can read these here! I think that it is fun to document all of Victory’s changes, while preserving fleeting moments and memories.

Victory loves the dog park, and I think that she has more fun each time we go together!  As you can see below, Victory had her ‘first kiss’ at the dog park (with a boy)!  When we were ready to leave, Victory was not ready to go home, even though it was nearly dusk!  As such, she refused to move, so we put her leash on her to get her to move!

Before the rain last night, we took Victory with us to get subs for dinner!  She loved going in the car for an outing!  On the way home, she had her front paws perched up on the side of the car looking out the window.  I have nice little nose markings on the car windows!  Victory can recognize our neighborhood from afar and she gets extremely excited!  (I, unfortunately, did not have my camera to capture her!  It was really cute).  Then, I took her out for a four mile walk in her Hound About, and she poked her head through her sun roof of her Hound About many times during our walk together!  I am sure we will take her for an outing this weekend as the weather should be nice!

In other news, earlier this week, our little Victory ‘graduated’ from Level I Dog Training!  We are so proud of her.  Her confidence has improved and she really enjoyed the training and all the chicken that went along with her training class!

Happy Friday!

“The more people I meet, the more I love my dog.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

Beginning in January of this year, I began a weekly photography project with my muse, Victory! I will continue to share this project on the blog!  I have also been documenting Victory’s milestones so to speak each month — you can read these here! I think that it is fun to document all of Victory’s changes, while preserving fleeting moments and memories.

Victory loves her Hound About!  Since we have been having nicer and warmer weather, we have been going on more walks outside.  Recently, while on a long ride around the neighborhood, Victory was all smiles and she looked especially beautiful after a recent bath!  Recently, on walk, all on her own, Victory poked her head through the sunroof of her Hound About, shown below!  It was absolutely adorable!  She made my heart melt and I am glad that I had my camera to capture her!  You can see more of Victory in her Hound About here!  We are supposed to have some nice weather this weekend, so I am sure that we will take Victory for a spin in her Hound About and make a trip to the dog park!  We took Victory to the dog park last night and she seems to prefer being with the larger dogs — she sniffed and played with the large dogs — her confidence is growing!

Happy Friday!

Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. — Part XI – Rescue dogs in need of furever homes

I am excited about a long-term Dog Photography Project that I am working on with the Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter (BARCS) as well as some local dog rescue organizations, including the Dogs XL Rescue, Inc. and the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.  I hope to share further information in the future.  Using the following links, you can view Part I,  Part II,  Part IIIPart IVPart VPart VIPart VIIPart VIII, and Part IX and X.

For now, I can share some color photographs of these doggies pictured below in the hopes that they receive furever homes!  If you are interested in adopting any of these dogs pictured below, please contact the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. for further information.  Please consider dog rescue!  Biscuit’s story illustrates that we can make a positive difference and impact in one dog’s life.

Brief Description of the dogs in the order they are pictured below.

1. Danny — is a male mahogany sable sheltie who is 8 years old.  Danny is neutered and his litter mate is Mattie, also shown below.  Danny is a very loving and friendly sheltie!  Danny is a bit over weight and the rescue is working diligently to take about seven pounds off of Danny.  Danny is a smaller sheltie, about 14 inches tall at the shoulder.  Danny is currently in need of a furever home!

2. Mattie (short for Matthew) — is a male mahogany sable sheltie who is 8 years old.  Mattie is neutered; however, he is extremely overweight.  Mattie is Danny’s litter mate.  Mattie currently weighs 40 pounds, and the rescue is working diligently to take weight off of Mattie before he is placed in a furever home.  Mattie is very friendly, with long eye lashes, and she loves to have his belly rubbed!  Mattie is currently in need of a furever home and he will be placed once he reaches a healthy weight.

3. Blu — is a female tri-color shelite who is 7 years old.  Blu is a bit shy, but she comes around quickly.  She is a beautiful sheltie girl!  Blu previously lived on a farm, and she always wants to please her humans.  Most of all, Blu is extremely sweet and friendly and she loves attention!  Blu is currently in need of a furever home!

“All animals, except man, know that the ultimate point of life is to enjoy it.”  ~Samuel Butler

Recently, we took Victory to Worthington Dog Park, where she has begun to run and she is beginning to learn to play fetch!  Victory loves meeting new doggie friends at the park!  She is really blossoming and coming into her own!  We are really proud of the progress Victory continues to make and she continues to do well in her training class, with a few more weeks to go!

Happy Thursday!

Tips for Photographing Shelter and Rescue Dogs

Below are some photography tips for those people who photograph shelter dogs and rescue dogs to help increase their odds of receiving furever homes through photographs.  Photographs play a vital role in the adoption of animals, dogs in particular — so consider volunteering your time to help these dogs receive furever homes.

1. Use outdoor natural light: I find utilizing natural light is best when photographing shelter/rescue dogs.  The outdoors provides a nice backdrop as well.  I like to use natural spaces around the shelter when the dogs are not able to leave the premises of the shelter.  Alternatively, when dogs can be photographed in a different setting, I often like to use dog-friendly parks, which provide nice light and backgrounds.  However, when a park is not available, I try to use a natural background that is available.  I never photograph a dog in his/her cage, crate because you want to showcase the dog in a manner that makes each dog look the most attractive in a natural setting.  You want people to envision taking the dog home with them.

2. Try and have each dog bathed (or at least have each dog’s face cleaned): Whenever possible, I try to have each dog bathed prior to me photographing him/her.  However, sometimes, this request is not always possible.  In either case, I try my best to ensure that each dog’s face is free of debris to enable me to do less work in Photoshop during the editing process.

3. Use a dog handler, assistant: Whenever I photograph shelter/rescue dogs, I always have an assistant help me.  Since the shelter/rescue dog always needs to be on a leash, the assistant helps me position the dog in order for me to photograph each dog.  Thus, it is imperative to have an assistant while photographing the dogs outdoors.

4. Introduce yourself to the dog: Whenever I meet a new dog, I always go up to the dog and let each dog smell me.  Each dog is usually quite excited to be outside and in a new environment.  Then, I talk to each dog and pet him/her letting each dog know that I am there to help.  Most every dog that I have photographed is so happy to be outside and the task of photographing each dog is typically not too challenging.

5. Allow the dog some time to roam around the new surroundings to in order to have the dog be more focused: Since I photograph all shelter/rescue dogs outside, the environment is typically very refreshing, full of new smells, and exciting for each dog.  Thus, I allow time for each dog to go potty, smell its surroundings, and get comfortable.  After this time, the dog is typically ready to be photographed.

6. Use treats and toys to show of the dog’s personality: I typically have organic treats with me when I photograph shelter/rescue dogs.  However, I always make sure that each dog is permitted to have treats, does not have food allergies, etc.  Many dogs are treat/food motivated, so this works well during photo shoots.  Additionally, if the dog has a particular toy that he/she likes, I incorporate the toys into the shoot with the assistant’s help.

IMG_8491 2 Heads 2:18:14

7. Use a shallow depth of field: A shallow depth of field blurs out any distracting elements in the background while maintaining each dog as the focal point of each image.

8. Be patient and have fun: Every dog is different, just like people. I find it best not to rush the photo shoot and just let the dog be himself/herself. These are the moments when each dog’s personality really shines through, and these are not contrived moments, they just happen naturally, and it is my job to capture these moments.

9. Remove leashes and ‘distracting noise’ from the image: After each photo shoot, I cull, select, and edit the images and find the strongest face and body image for each dog. In these images, I remove the leash and any other ‘distracting noise’ in the image, maintaining the focus of each image on the dog.

10. After editing, promptly share the images with the shelter/rescue organization to help get the word out via social media to help the dogs get adopted: After each photo shoot, it is my goal to cull, select, and edit the images promptly because time is of the essence — these dogs need to find a forever home as quickly as possible. As such, I send to my contact at the shelter or rescue organization the best head shot and body shot of each dog to enable the shelter/rescue to promptly post the images online via social media, etc. Every shelter/rescue organization that I have worked with is always very appreciative of the help photographing the dogs, and it feels good trying to make a difference in these dogs’ lives.

Victory: Photography Project — 13

“All his life he tried to be a good person.  Many times, however, he failed.  For after all, he was only human.  He wasn’t a dog.” ~Charles Shultz

We recently took Victory to Home Depot to get some items for the house!  Since Home Depot is dog friendly, we decided to take Victory along with us!  She was such a good puppy — she loved Home Depot and she smiled from ear to ear!  She also seems to fancy herself with lumber, pictured below, similar to little Biscuit who also loved lumber and Home Depot (and Lowes)!  I am sure that there will be many trips to Home Depot in our future with our little Victory!

Happy Wednesday!
