Advice for ‘Puppy Parents’

Since we have been ‘puppy parents’ for over a year now with our little Victory, I thought that I would share some advice and tips that have helped us with transitioning Victory into her new home with us.

1. Set a daily routine.  Victory loves her routine, just like a kid who likes predictability and likes to know what to expect each day.  So we try to set a routine so that Victory knows what to anticipate.  She definitely is keenly aware when there is a change in her routine, and she even puts herself to bed after he final walk.  On the weekends, we have to call her back downstairs as we stay up later!

2. Be consistent.  It is important to be consistent to ensure your new furry family member understands you, which also helps sets boundaries with your new family member so he/she can learn what is appropriate behavior and what is not appropriate behavior, etc.  Plus, being consistent will help each furry family member develop confidence.

3. Have patience.  A new furry family member is in a new environment, and it takes time for he/she to bond with his/her humans.  It took several months for Victory to feel comfortable in her new home with us.  She is sometimes still a bit shy with new people who come over to visit.  However, with a lot time, consistency, and patience, Victory is totally bonded to us as we are to her.

4. Be understanding.  When we first took Victory home, we quickly learned she loved to chew — specifically, chew our things.  She has chewed our pillows, pillow cases, sheets, duvet, and my clothes!  I was not happy at the time, but we understood that she did not know otherwise.  Fortunately, by telling her “no” when we caught her in the act of chewing our things, helped to mitigate this behavior over time.  Fortunately, most of her chewing of our items has subsided!  However, since Victory loves to chew, we make sure that she is thoroughly stocked with chew toys so that she has something of her own to chew constantly!  I highly recommend these types of chew toys.

5.  Start grooming early on.  I brush Victory every morning, with few exceptions.  I stay on top of her grooming because she always wants to looks her best and it prevents mats in her fur coat, which makes brushing easier each day.  I also put a dab of baby powder behind her ears each morning to soak up any oils.   Victory is pretty cooperative with me.  However, I believe that if I did not start brushing her early on, she may not be as cooperative.  Plus, she has learned that this is part of her ‘morning routine!’  (We have the vet’s office clip her paws and nails each month.)

6. Start brushing teeth early on.  I brush Victory’s teeth every morning after her walk with few exceptions.  This takes commitment.  Victory is pretty cooperative because she knows that she get a treat after she is done getting her teeth brushed.  Most importantly, since we have been brushing, her teeth are in much better shape versus how her teeth were when we met her with tartar build up on her back molars.  We use this toothpaste with a small toothbrush and this oral spray after teeth brushing.  In tandem, they work really well to keep gums healthy, fight bad breath, and fight tartar build up.  Most of all, we do not want Victory to go under anesthesia unnecessarily for a teeth cleaning, and this is another incentive to brush her teeth daily.

7. Attend training.  Take your furry family member to training in order to have you trained on how to work with your new furry family member.  We went to training with Victory last year, and we are considering attending another training class with her.  The training class was helpful because it got Victory exposed to other dogs and people; and the class helped train Doug and myself to train Victory on basic commands.  Plus, it is a good bonding experience.  I recommend doing thorough research on local dog training organizations in your area to ensure a good fit.  We only do positive-based training.

8. Go on outings.  Take your furry family member on outings, adventures, to help your furry family member get exposed to new environments.  Most furry family members enjoy a change of scenery.  Plus, this helps your new family member get socialized as well.  We make a concerted effort to go on outings with Victory.  She loves to go in the car and go to new places!   In the winter months it is tougher as there are not as many places available to us due to the cold weather and snow.  However, we are resourceful and find places to take her!

9. Take many photographs.  Time goes by so quickly, in a blink of an eye.  Therefore, I believe it is important to make a commitment to photograph (and make videos) to capture everyday moments with your furry family member.  I have heard many stories from people who did not photograph their furry family regularly and are deeply saddened to learn after their furry family member’s passing, that they wished that they had more photographs.  Photographs are wonderful because they capture moments in time forever, especially in this digital age.  I am really happy that I did this with our Biscuit and I am happy to be documenting ordinary moments with Victory as someday these will be extraordinary moments.

10. Give love.  Importantly, always show and give love toward your furry family member!  They give us so much unconditional love and support!  They are a constant in our lives and we should always be grateful for their presence in our lives.

I hope that these tips are helpful!

Happy Friday!

Victory: Paw Art

When we went to Annapolis over Thanksgiving weekend, we purchased a Paw Posie Kit.  With this kit, you first place the paint on a wet sponge and then you take your furry family member’s paw and place his/her paw in the paint and then you immediately place the paw on the paper.  You repeat this process until you have roughly three to four paw prints on the paper, heavy card stock.  (We purchased a red kit, which came out looking a little pink — Victory’s favorite color.)

On a weekend after Victory’s paws and nails were clipped at the vet’s office, we decided to make her paw prints because there was less fur to get in the way of her prints.  It took both Doug and I to make the paw prints.  As a result, I could not photograph the process of making Victory’s paw prints.  Doug held the paper and I dabbed Victory’s paw in the paint and placed her paw on the paper three times!  Victory was extremely cooperative, and she made beautiful paw prints — she is a Pawcasso!  Then, we gave her a bath, much to Victory’s dismay, to wash off the paint, etc.

After the paint was dry containing her beautiful and dainty paw prints, shown below on the lower right, we sent the paw prints along with background information about Victory to the artist, Rosemary Williams, located in Annapolis, who uses water colors to create flowers from the paw prints.  We decided we wanted red roses to be made out of Victory’s paw prints.  Thus, Rosemary made wild red roses out of Victory’s paw prints and you can still even see the detail of Victory’s prints from her paw on the final watercolor, shown below!  We are going to professionally frame and hang Victory’s Paw Posies in our home in order to preserve her paw prints!  We think that this is a really unique keepsake; we had fun making the paw prints together; and we were pleased with the result — the final watercolor feels like our sweet Victory!

Happy Wednesday!

Making A Christmas Ornament with Your Furry Family Member!

Over the weekend, we made a paw print Christmas ornament with our little Victory for our Christmas tree!  I love Christmas ornaments and we thought that this would be a nice keepsake as well.  I could not photograph the process of making the ornament with Victory because I had to help Doug place Victory’s paw in the putty, and I only have two hands!

It is pretty simple and easy to make a paw print ornament via a kit.  Additionally, I am sure that there are recipes to make your own homemade putty/clay as well.

1. Kneed the putty for a minute.

2. Spread the putty out.

3. Smooth the putty.

4. Place your furry family member’s paw in the putty and hold for several seconds.  You want to press your furry family member’s paw firm enough to make the paw print, while not pressing too firmly.  It is important that the paw is thoroughly cleaned and dry before placing your furry family member’s paw in the putty.

5. Make a circular hole, where desired, for the ribbon using a straw and knife.

6. Place ornament on a cutting board and let the putty dry.

7. After the ornament has completely dried, string the ornament with ribbon.

8. Write your furry family member’s name and date on the back of the ornament.  You also can purchase letters to press into the putty to create your furry family member’s name under or above his/her paw print.

9. Spray the ornament with Valspar clear semi-gloss spray (if you wish).

10. Place the ornament on your Christmas tree!

We made a rectangular shaped paw print ornament, which is now on our Christmas tree!  (Victory was recently groomed, so there was less hair on her paws to obtain a better print!)  We are going to try again and make a circular shaped ornament with Victory’s paw print soon!

Happy Tuesday!

Victory: Visits Santa!

Victory is ready for Christmas!  She got groomed and she got a bath and she looks great!  We had a busy weekend doing some fun Christmas activities with Victory!  We took Victory to visit Santa this weekend!  Victory was such a good girl on Santa’s lap!  Victory wore her new Christmas sweater from Quebec that she got while on vacation, and she even let me put on her tartan antlers while visiting Santa!  In addition to pink, we think Victory looks great in red as well!

Additionally, here is a link to Biscuit visiting Santa!

ASPCA: Gift Ideas for Furry Friends and Furry Friend Lovers!

The ASPCA recently contacted me to share some important and fun information with fellow ‘dog friends!’  The holidays present a time when shoppers are buying gifts for pet lovers and pets alike, and studies show that over a third of Americans purchase holiday gifts for their pet(s).  Doug and I are in this category — we treat our beautiful Victory as a family member and we are excited to celebrate our second Christmas with our little Victory at our home!  We have already purchased Victory’s Christmas gifts!  Below, the ASPCA has shared some DIY gift ideas; pet gifts from its online store; and gifts for pet lovers!

DIY Ideas:  Below are some fun gift ideas for DIY enthusiasts or just those trying to cut back on costs.  As such, ASPCA behavior experts have put together the following suggestions, some of which are pictured below:

  • DIY dog gift: To make a tasty chew toy, soak a rope toy in chicken broth and then freeze.  Once frozen, give the toy to your dog for hours of savory chewing.
  • DIY cat gift: Rip off a piece of aluminum foil, put cat food or cat nip in it, and crumble it up into a ball.  This serves a fun batting toy for hours of kitty entertainment.

Happy Birthday, Nick!

Over the weekend, it was Nick’s birthday and he turned eight, we think!  Nick, as most of you might know who have been following the blog, is my parents’ rescue papillon mix dog!  My parents adopted Nick in August of 2011.  In our family, we celebrate our furry family members’ birthdays (we most recently celebrated Victory’s birthday in October!)  This year, we got Nick an assortment of bandannas for his birthday!  Nick also got a new sweater from my parents, which he is wearing below.  Last year, we got Nick an Orvis bed, and the year before, we got him an embroidered sweater!  We are all for spoiling our furry family members!

Happy Birthday, Nick!

P.S.  Here is a video of Nick!

Dog Beds: Finding the Right One for Your Furry Family Member

These days, there are so many dog bed options for your furry family member!  At times, it can be difficult to discern what type of dog bed to purchase for your favorite furry family member!  Outlined below are descriptions of a few different types of dog beds — and you might find the perfect dog bed match for your furry family member!

1. Therapeutic/Orthopedic Support Beds: Therapeutic/orthopedic beds are designed especially for dogs with arthritis or other orthopedic problems.  These type of dog beds are typically made with high quality thick foam, proving extra support for dogs’ bodies, which prevents less stress on dogs’ joints.  These type of dog beds are mainly designed for seniors and thin dogs.

2. Lounging Dog Beds: Lounging beds typically offer the softest and roomiest spots possible for your furry family member!  If your dog falls asleep on his/her back, these classic square or round beds deliver ample room to stretch, and plenty of cushiony support.  Many of these beds are covered with materials such as fleece, flannel, denim, faux suede, or microfiber.  They often contain a polyester filling and/or foam padding.  Lounging beds range in quality from basic economy to more expensive designer versions.

3. Nesting Dog Beds:  Nesting beds provide a pillowy nest with lots of protection.  These beds feature higher walls and supportive sides for dogs.  Some nesting beds also have raised edges.  The raised edge feature makes it ideal for your dog to lean on or curl up — just like a nest.  Dogs look so adorable all nestled in their nest!

4. Donut Dog Beds: Much like nesting beds, described above, donut dog beds provide a rim or edge around the bed.  This edge is a pillow that lets your dog really curl up and sink in.  These beds are typically round or oval and made of very soft material.

5. Outdoor Dog Beds:  Outdoor dog beds are ideal to have during the warm months during the year.  Most dogs like to be with their human companions, so having the ability to provide your furry family member with comfort outside via an outdoor dog bed is very fitting!  Most outdoor dog beds have a polyester/canvas cover, specifically treated to prevent water absorption.  Also, the covers on outdoor dog beds are usually removable for cleaning purposes.

6. Heated Dog Beds:  Heated dog beds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, while providing gentle heat and warmth to your furry family member.  Some beds even utilize your dog’s own body heat to reflect the warmth they crave.  Heated dog beds are ideal for the cooler months, small breed dogs, or for senior dogs that need a little extra warmth.

7. Cooling Dog Beds:  Have you ever noticed your furry family member lying on a cold hard floor after he/she has been playing outside?  Fortunately, there are dog beds that offer a cool yet comfortable surface for your dog to relax and cool down.  Cooling dog beds are usually made out of plastic and are filled with a water or gel like liquid.  Dog breeds that have a tendency to overheat will benefit the most from a cooling dog bed.

8. Travel Dog Beds:  If you enjoy traveling with your furry family member, then you might want to have a travel bed on hand.  These beds are much like a typical dog bed, except that they roll up, which saves space, while traveling.  A travel bed gives you the flexibility to provide a comfortable spot for your furry family member while your furry family member is away from home.

All of the dog bed types, briefly described above, are offered in many different designs and colors.  Victory loves to sleep in our bed during the night; however, during the day she loves to sleep on her lounging bed!

Honoring Biscuit and Victory: A Special Tribute — A New Look for Biscuit’s Space

Today is a big and special day on the blog!  Since we have had our little darling, Victory, for a year already as of October 12 (also Victory’s birthday), and because she is carrying on the ‘Biscuit’s Space’ name, we decided it was time to have Victory running next to her brother, Biscuit, on the blog’s header!  We do not think that Biscuit would mind sharing the blog header with his sissy, Victory, because Biscuit would want us to showcase helping other shelties like himself receive a second chance at life, while promoting dog rescue — the spirit of Biscuit’s Space.

Over the summer I contacted Bee Johnson, who illustrated the original header last summer, in honor of Biscuit, and I asked her if she would be willing to illustrate and add our Victory to Biscuit’s right side of the blog header.  In order to do this, I needed to get some good photos of Victory.  However, it was tough to capture Victory running while looking at the camera like Biscuit  because Victory is so quick on her feet!  After a couple of days of trying to capture the right image, while on vacation, with Doug’s help running with Victory, I finally got the image of Victory in motion, in a similar stance to Biscuit, along with a few close up images of Victory’s face.  These images, shown below, enabled Bee to create the illustration of our sweet Victory!  We absolutely love the new blog header, capturing the essence of Biscuit’s Space, with our furbabies, Biscuit and Victory, shown below!  Bee truly captured the essence of Victory and Biscuit!

Bee is very talented and she was wonderful and easy to work with on this project that is near and dear to our hearts!  Thank you so much, Bee — you brought our little Victory to life and we love the results of your work!  If you are looking for an illustration commission, I highly recommend working with Bee!

Please visit the blog to see the new blog header shown below!
