Biscuit’s Upcoming Surgery

Today’s blog post is an update concerning our little Biscuit.  Biscuit is having surgery this Friday, April 26, 2013, to remove polyps from his left ear — the ear that has a narrowed and thickened canal from a previous ruptured ear drum.  Per the vet, Biscuit is well enough to undergo anesthesia.  Biscuit will also have his teeth cleaned since he is going to have another procedure completed.  We hope all goes smoothly.

Biscuit’s kidney enzymes have increased and Biscuit started a human form phosphorus binder a few weeks  ago.   We have an appointment scheduled in mid May to consult a specialist to ensure that we are not missing anything and to obtain another opinion from someone who specializes in these types of cases.  We hope that his kidney enzyme levels will not continue to increase rapidly; and we really hope that these kidney enzyme levels will decrease.

Overall, since beginning the phosphorus binder, Biscuit has had a lot of energy, in fact so much energy, that he has kept us up all night for about six nights.   Biscuit is walking better than ever.  He is walking a greater distance than he has ever walked since we rescued and adopted him.   Thankfully, this week, things have begun to calm down and return some normalcy during the night — we hope that the “late night play extravaganzas” will continue to cease.  We are walking Biscuit more during the evenings since he enjoys walking.

Biscuit got bathed and groomed this weekend and he is looking good!  Biscuit had a great weekend filled with a lot of walking in the gorgeous weather.  (However, Doug and I were quite tired out this past weekend from Biscuit’s “late night play extravaganzas”).  We visited the house construction site as well.  Below are some photographs of our little Biscuit from this past weekend!  As you can see, Biscuit still loves building materials!

Thank you to everyone for all of the positive thoughts for Biscuit.  We greatly appreciate it.  Please keep positive thoughts and energy for our Biscuit.

Biscuit the Builder!

This past weekend, we went to the house construction site, and thankfully, it appears that the builder is slightly behind schedule.  Biscuit loves going to Lowes and Home Depot, and he also seems to be drawn to on site building materials!  Below are some photographs of Biscuit transiting the construction site!

Biscuit had a good weekend.  He sunned himself at Wegmans; went to dinner with us at Harbor East; and Biscuit went shopping with us in Towson — thankfully Biscuit was permitted in Athleta and Ann Taylor Loft!  Biscuit was a hit at these stores and he was all smiles!  Biscuit was even permitted in the changing room with me to give his paw stamp of approval!  We wish that there were even more dog friendly stores!  We took Biscuit for a long walk on Sunday since the weather was so nice outside!  Biscuit loves the fresh air!

Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) — Part I – Shelter dogs in need of furever homes

I am excited about a long-term Dog Photography Project that I am working on with the Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter (BARCS) as well as some local dog rescue organizations.  I hope to share further information in the future.

For now, I can share some color photographs of these doggies pictured below in the hopes that they receive furever homes!  If you are interested in fostering or adopting any of these dogs pictured below, please contact BARCS for further information.  Please consider dog rescue!  Biscuit’s story illustrates that we can make a positive difference and impact in one dog’s life.

Brief description of the dogs in the order they are pictured below.

1. Cairo — is a male terrier-pit bull mix, approximately 5 years old.  Cairo is very sweet, loving, and gentle.

2. Gabby — is a female retriever-siberian husky mix, approximately 1 year old.  Gabby is a young pup and she has a lot of energy!

3. Darla — is a female terrier-pit bull mix, approximately 3 years old.  Darla is very sweet, loving, and gentle.

4. Princess Tulip — is a female terrier-pit bull mix, approximately 1 year old.  Princess Tulip loves affection and attention and she has a lot of energy!

5. Lucy — is a female terrier-pit bull mix, approximately 1 year old.  Lucy is very sweet and gentle, mild-mannered, and she loves to cuddle!

Happy Wednesday!

Why it is important to photograph your dog

For those of you who regularly follow this blog,  you might know (or have guessed), I love to photograph our little Biscuit!  Biscuit is my muse.  I look back through the albums I have made of Biscuit over the past two years, and it always reminds me of memories I may have forgotten such as going somewhere on a day trip together, for example.  These photographs of Biscuit are very important as these photographs capture, document, and preserve a moment in time that has since passed.

Below, I have outlined why, in my opinion, it is very important to photograph your dog!

1. Dogs are part of the family.  Just like Doug and I, most people consider their dog(s) important members of the family.  They bring laughter, forgiveness, loyalty, adoration, and love into our lives.  So, it only seems natural to me to take as many quality photographs as possible of our furry family members.

2. Dogs’ lives are short-lived.  Dogs and other small animals tend to live much shorter lives than their human counterparts, and it is important to realize that their time here in the physical form is often fleeting.  This is one of the most difficult truths about having a furry family member – their time here is very short and it does not seem fair.  This is why it is important to never take for granted our dog’s time here on earth.

3. Photographs preserve the physical attributes and memories of our dogs.  Photographs remind us of the memories we have made with our dogs, while simultaneously capturing the physical attributes of our furry family members.  Since most people consider their dogs as part of the family, it only seems fitting to regularly photograph our furry family members to share with others and to display in our home.  Further, you can consider making a “bragging book” (a compilation of photographs in book form) of your furry family member(s) to show off to your friends and family!  This also makes a great gift!

4. Photographs of our dogs make us happier.  Photographs of our furry family members make us happy.  Just like we generally have photographs of our human family members, often times I have heard stories of people finding themselves looking back with regret because they do not have as many photographs of their dog(s) as they would like have.  Thus, most people are very happy to have frequently photographed their dog(s).  Also, if you adopt a younger dog, through photographs, you can capture and document the transformation of your growing furry family member — a happiness boost!

5. Photographs are tangible.  Photographs are wonderful because they are tangible and give people something concrete to refer back to, which is especially important after someone’s dog passes.

*The moral of the story – do not take anything for granted and be sure to enjoy each day with your furry family member and find a way to regularly photograph and document your furry family members!

Biscuit and the New House Construction Site!

Each Friday evening we take Biscuit to the new house construction site.  Thankfully, it is beginning to feel like spring here and it feels really nice to be outside more!  The trees are in bloom and the grass is getting greener.  Biscuit had a lot of fun at the new house site!  He met two more doggie friends as well!  We were told that by the end of today, the house should be totally framed with a roof!  Things appear to be moving quite swiftly.  Below are a few photographs of our precious Biscuit!

Happy Friday!

A Picnic with Biscuit!

This past weekend we took Biscuit out for a picnic since the weather was so nice outside!  Biscuit really is happy that it is warmer outside!  Below are a few photos of Biscuit enjoying the sun.  He loves to sun himself!

This week Doug put Biscuit’s Hound About together — and Biscuit enjoyed a 2 hour ride in his Hound About!  However, after going to bed after his long ride in his Hound About, Biscuit woke us up and he wanted to play for the next several hours in the middle of the night.  Needless to say, Doug and I were exhausted at work the following day after only getting three hours of sleep!  The past few nights, we have been taking Biscuit for a long walk to help ensure he sleeps through the night for us!

A few photographs of Biscuit are below from our picnic!  We are so happy that it is getting warmer!

Biscuit’s Adventures to Quiet Waters Park

This weekend we were planning to take Biscuit to D.C., before we realized that we had a play at the Everyman Theatre!  (We will likely try and take Biscuit to D.C. in the coming weeks.)  Thus, Doug researched some alternatives for us.  A friend told us about the Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis.  Unlike our last visit to the dog park, Biscuit had a great time and he even met a nine-year-old female sheltie named Coca!  Biscuit has not seen a sheltie since we moved from our former neighborhood!  What a treat!  Biscuit was all smiles at the dog park!  (Although, Biscuit has not met a lady as special as Princess!)

Some photos of Biscuit’s trip to the dog park are shown below!

Happy Tuesday!

Blog Stomp – A Time Saver

I had heard of many bloggers, especially photographers, raving about BlogStomp.  I had to check it out myself.  If you are a blogger, especially a photographer blogger, you should check out BlogStomp.  It is a useful tool to prepare and share your images on your blog.  (Version 2.0 was released not too long ago.)

I really like the simplicity of BlogStomp.  It is a nice alternative to watermarking — which I have never been a fan because watermarking negatively impacts the image.  The new 2.0 version of BlogStomp is pretty simple to use and it has been a huge time saver for me as it prepares your images for the web in seconds, and it allows you to cluster images together!  It is literally one click to “stomp” your images onto your blog!  So for your bloggers, this is definitely a time saver!  You can purchase BlogStomp for $49.00 for a single user.

If the weather cooperates, we are taking Biscuit to an excursion to D.C. this weekend!  We will get his Hound About ready — one of his favorite things to do is  to stroll around in his Hound About!

Biscuit at Home Depot

Last night, we took Biscuit to Home Depot in Columbia to see whether Biscuit prefers Lowes over Home Depot.  We discovered that Biscuit likes both places!  We really wish that spring would get here soon so we can take Biscuit to more places outside!  Biscuit was a hit at Home Depot and he received many compliments!  Biscuit seemed to like every department from Gardening to Plumbing!  A few photos of Biscuit’s trip to Home Depot are below!

Thank you for your good wishes for Biscuit.  Biscuit begins his human form of a phosphorus binder tonight to help with his kidney deficiencies.

Biscuit at the New Home Construction Site

Since the construction on our new home began in early March, we have been driving over to the construction site on a weekly basis to see the progress on our house being made.  Of course, Biscuit comes along with us to monitor the progress!  Below are some photographs of little Biscuit pursuing around the construction site.  Thankfully, he is smiling which is a really good sign!

Additionally, Biscuit had a great weekend!  We took Biscuit with us to a birthday party for our good friend.  Biscuit was in seventh heaven at the party!  He loved being around so many people at the party!  We also took Biscuit with us to Harbor East in downtown Baltimore for pizza and he loved it.  We think that Biscuit remembers going to Harbor East prior to our move!  Also, Biscuit even was able to go into the Lululemon store (one of my favorite stores) with us where he was a hit with the ladies!
