A Peaceful Biscuit

Biscuit is doing much better since yesterday’s events with the Comfy Cone.  The t-shirt is working out really well.  Biscuit has not tried to go after his stitches and he is still able to clean himself and get water when he wants to get a drink.  He seems back to his usual self, which is good!  We have the smaller cone ready to go, if needed.

Biscuit’s fur is not up to our usual standards, as we are unable to brush him daily right now.  After his stitches are removed, he will be getting a bath!

Below are a few photographs of our precious little Biscuit!

Biscuit – The Escape Artist

Biscuit’s recovery seems to be going smoothly, except he hates wearing his Comfy Cone!  Over the weekend, Biscuit snapped at us and he also bit Doug and I, (no skin was broken) and he continues to show us his teeth each time we put on his Comfy Cone.  This is very much out of character for Biscuit.  Biscuit has already managed to take his Comfy Cone off two times this weekend.  As a result, yesterday, we purchased a collar with a snap clasp that we looped through the Comfy Cone so Biscuit can no longer take it totally off, especially if we are not at home with him to put it immediately back on him.  (Biscuit typically wears a small Martingale collar).

However, when I got home today, despite our best efforts, Biscuit got his Comfy Cone off again!  Fortunately, he did not go after his stitches.  We went to see the vet this evening, and she gave us a smaller Comfy Cone and she recommended that we put a shirt on Biscuit.

We are still awaiting biopsy results from his mass removal, which we should get sometime this week.  Otherwise, Doug and I wish that March 2, 2012 were here – when the Comfy Cone comes off!

Below is a photograph of Biscuit wearing one of Doug’s t-shirts, while getting a break from his new, smaller, Comfy Cone.

Biscuit’s Recovery

Biscuit seems to be doing pretty well since his surgery.  However, he does not like his cone, and we cannot blame him.  We have been staying home with him this weekend, and he has been resting quite a bit.  Biscuit has about twelve more days in the Comfy Cone.  If his wound heals ok after his stitches are removed by the vet, and the vet says that it is ok, we will give him a bath to freshen him up!  Below are some recent photographs of Biscuit.

Biscuit’s Successful Surgery

Our precious little Biscuit came through surgery today with no unexpected surprises.  His small mass was removed and was sent to the lab for biopsy, and we should receive the results next week.  His teeth have been cleaned and look very white!  No tooth extractions were necessary per the exam and dental x-rays.  The x-rays confirmed that Biscuit does have arthritis in his front paws.  Biscuit will be on antibiotics and a pain-killer for the next week, in addition to taking the medicine to lower his urine protein levels.  Biscuit, at his next check up, may be placed on medicine or receive special treatments for his arthritis after he recovers from his surgery.  Biscuit, unfortunately, will be wearing a Comfy Cone as shown below for the next two weeks until his stitches are removed.  All in all, Biscuit  is doing pretty well with the large size Comfy Cone — he is learning to maneuver his way around.  He is still giving us his paw for more kibble!  We are very happy that Biscuit made it through surgery with no complications, and hope that he has a smooth recovery.

Biscuit’s Surgery

Please keep good thoughts as tomorrow is a big day for Biscuit – he is having surgery to remove a small mass, complete a dental cleaning, and perform x-rays to assess his arthritis.

Biscuit – Centerfold

We just received our February 2012 Orvis Dog Book and Biscuit appears again as the centerfold!  (In the centerfold there is a small photograph of what Biscuit looked like at the Sheltie Rescue, prior to being adopted).  Biscuit also appears on the back cover of the February 2012 Orvis Dog Book, in support of rescue dogs in connection with Orvis and the Petfinder.com Foundation.  Please see the photographs below.  We could not be happier!

Biscuit will appear on the March 2012 Spring Orvis Dog Book coming out in about one month!

Biscuit’s Valentine’s Grooming

Yesterday Biscuit got a bath as well as a nail and paw trim in time for Valentine’s Day!  We think that he feels better each time that he gets a bath!  Below are some photographs taken this morning.  He is looking good!

Vacation 2012

Biscuit has planned his vacation for this summer!  We will be taking Biscuit to Nova Scotia for three weeks this summer!  We had such a good time last year that we decided to return this summer and rent the same cottage, below, on the water, just outside of Halifax.  We are looking forward to a relaxing and fun vacation with our little Biscuit.  We also will celebrate Biscuit’s 9th Birthday while in Nova Scotia.

We plan to blog from Nova Scotia this summer!

Greetings from Biscuit

Biscuit is a Shetland Sheepdog who was rescued in August of 2010 off of the streets in North Carolina.  He was severely malnourished, his fur coat was almost non-existent, and he was missing multiple teeth.  Biscuit likely lived in a puppy mill as his back legs are deformed from likely spending too much time in cramped, unhealthy, quarters.  Biscuit was then taken to a sheltie rescue in Frederick, Maryland, where he lived with many other shelties in the hopes of getting adopted.  We had the fortunate opportunity to meet Biscuit in December of 2010.   When we first met Biscuit he was very sad and extremely timid, and we were not sure that he would ever come out of his shell.  We decided to adopt Biscuit on the spot, and he has been a loving member of our family ever since.  Gone is the shy, apprehensive Biscuit.  In its place is a confident, friendly, and handsome Biscuit with a zest for life.

Below is a photograph of Biscuit when we first met him in December 2010.

Fortunately, Biscuit’s life has dramatically changed for the better and he does not even look like the same dog when we met him – Biscuit has literally gone from living on the street to becoming an Orvis Cover Dog Winner!   Please see the following links and photographs below.  Please see this link announcing the Orvis Cover Dog Winners.
