Honoring Biscuit and Victory

For my birthday last summer, Doug had two tapered baguettes added to my engagement ring, in honor of Biscuit and Victory — our first furry family members.  Doug originally designed the setting and picked out the stones for my engagement ring, on his own, several years ago, and I love it.  (The only other person we have seen have a similar engagement ring, which we somewhat recently discovered, is Princess Mary of Denmark — Doug has elegant taste fit for a princess!)  I like to think of my engagement ring representing: our past (left ruby), our present (center diamond), and our future (right ruby).

The top ring comprises small diamonds from Doug’s Grandma Rose’s wedding ring, and we added similarly sized rubys to this channel setting to coordinate with the engagement ring.  Doug’s Mom was thoughtful to give us some of the stones from Grandma Rose’s wedding ring; and we had the ring made soon after.  Grandma Rose was a very special lady and we miss her dearly — she was a very wise and strong woman.  She was a large part of Doug’s life and she was also a very positive influence in Doug’s life.  I am happy to have known Grandma Rose.  Family rings are really neat, as you are always able to carry that special person with you, which you can continue to pass down to future generations.

Adding a stone(s) to a favorite piece of jewelry is a unique way to honor a family member and/or furry family member!

Happy Monday!

Characteristics: Interesting People

Food for thought: “Interesting people do things.  They share what they know, what they’re curious about and what they worry about.  They have interests and hobbies and causes and places and people they care about. ”  Check out this interesting article by Jessica Hagy.

After reviewing the list below, I have to agree, that the most interesting people I know and admire, possess most of these characteristics!

Happy Friday!  Have a great and interesting weekend!

ASPCA: Dog Fighting Sentencing

The ASPCA recently contacted me and asked me to share information related to strengthening the sentencing guidelines for those who are involved in animal fighting cases.  Specifically, the ASPCA is currently working to persuade the U.S. Sentencing Commission (“USSC”) to raise the jail penalties for people who fight animals.  Dog fighting is a terrible crime and considered a felony in all 50 states.  However, and unfortunately, the current recommended jail sentences do not reflect the seriousness of the offense — convicted dog fighters typically receive sentences as low as six months in jail and almost half of all offenders only receive probation, according to the ASPCA.

This coming April, the USSC will be updating its sentencing guidelines concerning dog fighting cases.  The ASPCA is requesting that the public and interested parties urge the USSC to create higher sentences here.  If you are interested in this topic and cause, the USSC will be accepting public comments until March 21, 2016.  You can read further information here.

Victory: Photography Project — 83

Beginning in January 2014, I started a weekly photography project with my muse, Victory!  I will continue to share this project on the blog this year!  My goal is to document all of Victory’s changes, while preserving fleeting moments and memories, while capturing moments of our everyday.

Happy Monday!  This is how I am feeling today — tired, which is exemplified by our fur girl, Victory, shown below!  We had a good weekend and the weather was warm and beautiful here!  Yesterday we took Victory on a long walk, about five miles, in her Hound About, which she loved, of course!  Then, we took Victory out to lunch and to the pet store, where she picked out some new treats!  We all hope that spring comes soon!

Wishing you a productive and great day and week!

Fun Gifts with Messages

I love quotes, sayings, and mantras.  In fact, quotes are shown all over our house!  I can’t live without them!  I somewhat recently discovered mantras and saying on jewelry.  I discovered Mantra Bands through a friend at the end of last year; and I discovered Dogeared a little over a year ago.  These pieces are made in the USA and they make wonderful gifts for friends and family.

Mantra Bands are bracelets with uplifting mantras, which make great gifts.  A few of my favorite mantra’s, including my word for the year, ‘present,’ are shown below.

Links: Be Present; Follow Your Bliss; Live in the Moment; Faith Hope Love; Brave; Fearless; Everything Happens for a Reason; Forever Family; and Never Give Up.

Dogeared is a line of jewelry that contains different types of jewelry pieces that are simple and versatile.  Each piece tells a story of individuality, self-expression, love, and friendship.   A few of my favorite necklaces are shown below.

Happy Friday!  We hope that you have a lovely weekend.  We are in store for some sun and warmer temperatures, that we hope to take advantage of with our freshly bathed fur girl, Victory!

Dog + Cheetah

We love pandas and cheetahs.  We were very happy and excited to visit the new panda cub at the National Zoo this spring!  We have visited the past two cubs, Tai Shan and Bao Bao, at the National Zoo!

My Mom sent me this stroy about Adaeze, a cheetah, and Odie, an Australian shepherd, who are inseparable friends for over a year year who reside at the Leo Zoological Center in Greenwich, Connecticut.

According to the zoo representatives, “I wanted Adaeze to bond with a dog because she [Adaeze] would need the outlet for play and past studies have shown calm dogs can help tame cheetahs — especially in stressful public events where a dog is at ease, Leone said.”

The zoo tried pairing Adaeze with a picture perfect young puppy her age that was very calm, and older Odie was just suppose to be a fill-in.  However, to everyone’s surprise, Adaeze hit it off with Odie and they are best friends who play nonstop according to the zoo representatives.  In fact, the only time they are apart from each other is during feedings.  According to the zoo representatives, right after they finish up their meals, they wait, nose-to-nose against the door, excitedly waiting to be reunited!

This story illustrates that there are many positive roles a dog can play in one’s life!  Please see more of Adaeze and Odie playing together, here!  They are adorable!

Help: Saving Violet

This is a very difficult blog post to write.  Violet is a seven-year-old mastiff dog who was found on February 8, 2016, in Maryland, abandoned and emaciated, only weighing 56.4 pounds, a third of her normal body weight.  (Mastiffs generally weigh between 140 and 150 pounds).  Authorities report that Violet was pushed out of a car by a human(s) somewhere in Maryland.  Rescuers found Violet after animal control responded to a report concerning an emaciated dog.

A $5,000 reward is being offered from the Humane Society of the United States for information in the case that leads to an identification, arrest and conviction of those involved.

“It is unimaginably callous to cruelly starve and abandon an innocent dog in this way,” said Emily Hovermale, the Maryland state director for the Humane Society.  “We are hopeful this reward will bring forward anyone with information about this heinous crime.”

Thankfully, Violet is receiving a second chance at life due to the kind help of rescuers and Mutts Matter Rescue, Inc., a dog rescue located in Maryland, that I have worked with.

Violet is receiving vet care and she is living with a wonderful foster to help rehabilitate Violet until she is healthy enough and ready for adoption.  Violet’s case has received a lot of news coverage as well.  You can see more of Violet by viewing this news video of Violet in her foster home.  You can also read a recent article about Violet in the Washington Post.

Please consider making a donation to help save Violet.   Any donation amount is very appreciated and all donations will go to helping to rehabilitate Violet.  Doug and I donated, along with many others, and Violet’s case is a perfect example of why I am began my long-term photography project.  Please feel free to share this post with others who might be interested in helping this good cause.

You can keep apprised of Violet’s progress here on Violet’s Facebook page.  Violet is currently learning to climb steps!

Please help save Violet!

Around Here: February

Well, winter is truly here.  We have had quite a bit snow, and it has been cold here, but it will be a warm weekend reaching near 60 degrees!  Below are some items that have occurred around here in February!

-continuing to work steadily on my long-term photography project, and one portion of the deliverable remains to be completed; hopefully, I have a couple more months to go to finally finish!

-working on a new design for my website, which I hope will be finished later this spring/summer.

-my Mom and I have finished planning the final details for my sister’s baby shower next month!

-we are working on the final details of Victory’s portrait, which will be Audrey Hepburn inspired, to be painted this year, similar to Biscuit’s painting where they will hang side by side in our home!

-working on a color spot — one for Biscuit and one for Victory to hang in our home.

-we have planned our vacations for this year, and they will all, of course, include our fur girl, Victory!  She is getting to be a well-traveled little sheltie!  We are doing our vacations a little different this year than in past years.  We are spending them with each of our families and taking a few shorter trips on our own.  This year we are headed to Keeneland located in Lexington, Kentucky; Lake Michigan; Atlanta; and Charleston!  And, for one of our trips, there will be three Ergos!  It will be so much fun!

-burning candles in the house!

-enjoying date nights with Doug!

-enjoying a fun Valentine’s Day with my loves!

-enjoying cooking with Doug and trying new dinner recipes.  Here are a few of our recent favorites so far this month: Louisiana Chicken Pasta and Chicken Di Pana.

-still enjoying my yoga class!

-I began reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi — a really good read.

-watched the first and second seasons of Mozart in the Jungle — a good television series.

-started the second season of Better Call Saul — a good television series.

-excited and looking forward to going to Michigan to meet, hold, and photograph our soon-to-be nephew in several weeks!  We can’t wait to spoil him!

-using my new Fitbit and I’m hitting 10,000 steps per day most days.

-continuing to make more progress on our ever-growing to do list!

Happy Friday!  Have a wonderful weekend!  We are hosting a dinner over the weekend, and it should be fun!  We also will take our fur girl, Victory, for some outings to take advantage of this warmer weather as it has been quite cold here.  Victory will also get a much needed bath this weekend, and thankfully it will be warm!

Quote of the Day

IMG_1538 2 copy

I am in the home stretch of my long-term photography project, a few more months to go (hopefully), and sometimes I say to myself, “Am I ever going to finish?”  But that thought is exactly why I am doing this project.

I keep thinking of this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

I also frequently think about this quote by Sally Mann in her new book, Hold Still: “The voice of despair suggests seducingly to me that I should give up, that I’m a phony, that I’ve made all the good pictures I’m ever going to, and I have nothing more worth saying.  That voice is easy to believe, and, as a photographer and essayist (and my early mentor) Ted Orland has noted, it leaves me with only two choices: I can resume the slog and take more pictures, thereby risking further failure and despair, or I can guarantee failure and despair by not making more pictures.  It’s essentially a decision between uncertainty and certainty and, curiously, uncertainty is the comforting choice.”

Somehow the act of creation does feel scary and overwhelming, at times, as illustrated by the quotes above.  This project is reminding me to keep an open mind, persevere, and remembering that I can always go farther than I initially think.  Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”  I believe that every day.  If you dream something, make it happen, and witness it come to fruition — there is nothing more rewarding.

Happy Tuesday!

Victory: Photography Project — 82

Beginning in January 2014, I started a weekly photography project with my muse, Victory!  I will continue to share this project on the blog this year!  My goal is to document all of Victory’s changes, while preserving fleeting moments and memories, while capturing moments of our everyday.

We’re having a nice long weekend and Victory had a great Valentine’s Day!  After all, she is our little Valentine!   She now has some more toys to hoard in her ‘hut’ and some cute bowls to eat her treats in!  A few images from this weekend are shown below!

Happy Monday!
