For Furry Family Members: Dyson Animal DC 50

Recently, our Dyson DC 24 broke, and was deemed defective.  We had received the DC 24 as a wedding gift from Bed Bath and Beyond prior to meeting Biscuit and Victory.  So, we needed to get a new vacuum for our house.  After calling Dyson, to my surprise, Dyson told me that we could return our DC 24  for a credit towards a new Dyson vacuum!  So, since the DC 24 is no longer available, the most comparable Dyson vacuum that is now sold is the Animal DC 50.  So, we opted for the Animal DC 50!  This vacuum is great!  It is compact for going up and down stairs; it is multi-purpose — it works on hardwood floors, tile, rugs, and carpet; it is much more quiet; has a longer cord for vacuuming stairs; and it is smoother to use!  The Animal DC 50 is great and it picks up all of Victory’s sheltie furs really well!  So, if you have furry family members, I highly recommend the Animal DC 50, if you are in need of a new vacuum — it works like an animal!

Happy Monday!

Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. — Part XI – Rescue dogs in need of furever homes

I am excited about a long-term Dog Photography Project that I am working on with the Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter (BARCS) as well as some local dog rescue organizations, including the Dogs XL Rescue, Inc. and the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.  I hope to share further information in the future.  Using the following links, you can view Part I,  Part II,  Part IIIPart IVPart VPart VIPart VIIPart VIII, and Part IX and X.

For now, I can share some color photographs of these doggies pictured below in the hopes that they receive furever homes!  If you are interested in adopting any of these dogs pictured below, please contact the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc. for further information.  Please consider dog rescue!  Biscuit’s story illustrates that we can make a positive difference and impact in one dog’s life.

Brief Description of the dogs in the order they are pictured below.

1. Danny — is a male mahogany sable sheltie who is 8 years old.  Danny is neutered and his litter mate is Mattie, also shown below.  Danny is a very loving and friendly sheltie!  Danny is a bit over weight and the rescue is working diligently to take about seven pounds off of Danny.  Danny is a smaller sheltie, about 14 inches tall at the shoulder.  Danny is currently in need of a furever home!

2. Mattie (short for Matthew) — is a male mahogany sable sheltie who is 8 years old.  Mattie is neutered; however, he is extremely overweight.  Mattie is Danny’s litter mate.  Mattie currently weighs 40 pounds, and the rescue is working diligently to take weight off of Mattie before he is placed in a furever home.  Mattie is very friendly, with long eye lashes, and she loves to have his belly rubbed!  Mattie is currently in need of a furever home and he will be placed once he reaches a healthy weight.

3. Blu — is a female tri-color shelite who is 7 years old.  Blu is a bit shy, but she comes around quickly.  She is a beautiful sheltie girl!  Blu previously lived on a farm, and she always wants to please her humans.  Most of all, Blu is extremely sweet and friendly and she loves attention!  Blu is currently in need of a furever home!

If you want to adopt a rescue dog; donate money; and/or contribute your time to theSheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc., please contact Carol Guth via telephone at 301-663-0635; or via e-mail at sheltytaxi@aol.com.  To learn more, you can also visit the Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue, Inc.’s website.

Victory: One Wipe Charlies

Doug recently joined the Dollar Shave Club through the recommendation of a friend.  Doug also discovered One Wipe Charlies!  Doug ordered some for Victory (and himself)!  We have been using baby wipes on Victory before bed, as she sleeps with us in the bed and we want to ensure her bum is clean!  Fortunately, Victory consistently has ‘number 3’s’ on the Bristol Scale!  The One Wipe Charlies have been working great and they have a peppermint scent with aloe vera and chamomile!  Here is an amusing video about One Wipe Charlies!

Tips for Photographing Shelter and Rescue Dogs

Below are some photography tips for those people who photograph shelter dogs and rescue dogs to help increase their odds of receiving furever homes through photographs.  Photographs play a vital role in the adoption of animals, dogs in particular — so consider volunteering your time to help these dogs receive furever homes.

1. Use outdoor natural light: I find utilizing natural light is best when photographing shelter/rescue dogs.  The outdoors provides a nice backdrop as well.  I like to use natural spaces around the shelter when the dogs are not able to leave the premises of the shelter.  Alternatively, when dogs can be photographed in a different setting, I often like to use dog-friendly parks, which provide nice light and backgrounds.  However, when a park is not available, I try to use a natural background that is available.  I never photograph a dog in his/her cage, crate because you want to showcase the dog in a manner that makes each dog look the most attractive in a natural setting.  You want people to envision taking the dog home with them.

2. Try and have each dog bathed (or at least have each dog’s face cleaned): Whenever possible, I try to have each dog bathed prior to me photographing him/her.  However, sometimes, this request is not always possible.  In either case, I try my best to ensure that each dog’s face is free of debris to enable me to do less work in Photoshop during the editing process.

3. Use a dog handler, assistant: Whenever I photograph shelter/rescue dogs, I always have an assistant help me.  Since the shelter/rescue dog always needs to be on a leash, the assistant helps me position the dog in order for me to photograph each dog.  Thus, it is imperative to have an assistant while photographing the dogs outdoors.

4. Introduce yourself to the dog: Whenever I meet a new dog, I always go up to the dog and let each dog smell me.  Each dog is usually quite excited to be outside and in a new environment.  Then, I talk to each dog and pet him/her letting each dog know that I am there to help.  Most every dog that I have photographed is so happy to be outside and the task of photographing each dog is typically not too challenging.

5. Allow the dog some time to roam around the new surroundings to in order to have the dog be more focused: Since I photograph all shelter/rescue dogs outside, the environment is typically very refreshing, full of new smells, and exciting for each dog.  Thus, I allow time for each dog to go potty, smell its surroundings, and get comfortable.  After this time, the dog is typically ready to be photographed.

6. Use treats and toys to show of the dog’s personality: I typically have organic treats with me when I photograph shelter/rescue dogs.  However, I always make sure that each dog is permitted to have treats, does not have food allergies, etc.  Many dogs are treat/food motivated, so this works well during photo shoots.  Additionally, if the dog has a particular toy that he/she likes, I incorporate the toys into the shoot with the assistant’s help.

IMG_8491 2 Heads 2:18:14

7. Use a shallow depth of field: A shallow depth of field blurs out any distracting elements in the background while maintaining each dog as the focal point of each image.

8. Be patient and have fun: Every dog is different, just like people. I find it best not to rush the photo shoot and just let the dog be himself/herself. These are the moments when each dog’s personality really shines through, and these are not contrived moments, they just happen naturally, and it is my job to capture these moments.

9. Remove leashes and ‘distracting noise’ from the image: After each photo shoot, I cull, select, and edit the images and find the strongest face and body image for each dog. In these images, I remove the leash and any other ‘distracting noise’ in the image, maintaining the focus of each image on the dog.

10. After editing, promptly share the images with the shelter/rescue organization to help get the word out via social media to help the dogs get adopted: After each photo shoot, it is my goal to cull, select, and edit the images promptly because time is of the essence — these dogs need to find a forever home as quickly as possible. As such, I send to my contact at the shelter or rescue organization the best head shot and body shot of each dog to enable the shelter/rescue to promptly post the images online via social media, etc. Every shelter/rescue organization that I have worked with is always very appreciative of the help photographing the dogs, and it feels good trying to make a difference in these dogs’ lives.

Giveaway: PetBox

It is a happy day on the blog today!  Today is a Giveaway for one lucky doggie and/or kitty!  Please read below for further information.

PetBox is a subscription service based in San Deigo, California, which offers a mixture of high-quality and healthy greats, toys, grooming products, supplements, and more all sized appropriately for your doggie (and/or kitty), with plans as low as $29.00 per month.

What is really neat about PetBox, is that you get to choose and personalize what goes into your PetBox — how neat is that!  You have some control over what you receive, unlike some other subscription services.  Additionally, for those who opt for longer subscriptions, by allowing you to choose what comes in your PetBox, you avoid getting the same types of items over and over.  Also, PetBox is not only for our doggie friends, but also for kitty friends too!

For those who savor the surprise, you can also opt for a “surprise me” option if that better meets your needs.  However, it is nice to know that you have the option to select what comes in your PetBox.

For those of you who have doggie and kitty friends in the same household, you can sign up for a PetBox that includes items for both doggie and kitty friends!

Furthermore and very importantly, a PetBox subscription also gives back — for every box that ships, PetBox feeds a rescue animal.  PetBox has partnered with shelters, rescue organizations, and volunteers to deliver shipments of food every Friday. In fact, you can follow along every week on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with the hashtag #PetBoxFridays.  If you are a rescue, shelter or volunteer group that needs aid, please click here.

Overall, I was pleased with what we received from PetBox — a nice array of doggie goods that would have cost much more if purchased individually!  Most importantly, Victory really enjoyed the yummy treats from her PetBox!  You can see Victory licking her chops below!  Finally, PedBox would make a wonderful gift as well!  So, if you are interested in trying PetBox for yourself, checkout getpetbox.com!

2014 — Love Your Furry Family Member Day!

Today is Love Your Furry Family Member (Pet) Day!  Give your furry family member an extra hug and kiss today!  I am sure your little furry family member would love some extra love, special treats, and toys, etc.!

Victory will be getting extra love, special treats, and a new toy today — which is not different from most days for Victory!  We believe that Victory knows everyday is her special day as she runs our house!  In addition, we may take Victory on a car ride later today.  She loves the car and she loves to look out the window!  While in the car earlier this week, Victory surprised me and she put her front paws on the front arm rest, in an upright position, while sporting a huge smile on her face — she was so happy!  However, since she is mobile in the car, Victory will be in a seat belt, if I one of us is not able to hold her in the car!  She is getting more confident and comfortable each day!  Victory (as well as her fur coat) is blooming!  We are so happy our beloved little Biscuit sent us little Victory!

Happy Thursday!
