Moving Parenting Advice from Kahlil Gibran

In the final years of his long life, which encompassed world wars and assassinations and numerous terrors, the great cellist and human rights advocate Pablo Casals urged humanity to “make this world worthy of its children.” What is the worth of children, what are our responsibilities to them (when we do choose to have them, for it is also an act of courage and responsibility to choose not to), and what does it mean to raise a child with the dignity of being an unrepeatable miracle of atoms that have never before constellated and will never again constellate in that exact way?

A century ago, perched between two worlds and two World Wars, the Lebanese-American poet, painter, and philosopher Kahlil Gibran (January 6, 1883–April 10, 1931) addressed these elemental questions in a short passage from The Prophet, shown below, which I love.

When a young mother with a newborn baby on her chest asks for advice on children and parenting, Gibran responds:

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Victory: Pet Rover

Our beloved Hound About that we have used for over 13 years, with both Biscuit and Victory, is no longer working properly, which is a bummer. We got such good use out of it, and we kept it together in the final years with replacement parts, we kept on hand, and new wheels, but since the Hound About and its parts are not made any longer, we had to find a new option for our fur girl, Victory! After doing some research, we opted for the Pet Rover, and we got this model, Alex picked the yellow color because she liked the look of a taxi!

Victory absolutely loves her Pet Rover, and it has been a great substitute to our former Hound About, which we hold wonderful memories of our furry family members! Victory is thoroughly enjoying her rides in her Pet Rover, since the weather is getting a bit warmer, finally, which has been a great morale boost for her! Alex loves pushing the Pet Rover as well, and Victory loves her new wheels and rides in the fresh airl!

Below is a video of our beloved fur girl out for her evening ride!

Tangibly Preserving Your Child’s Artwork

This post is a little late, but last year, I made a book of Alex’s Kindergarten artwork. I had saved so much of her artwork, from Kindergarten, and I wanted to find a way to save it without holding onto every piece of her artwork, if you know what I mean. So, I photographed and edited the pieces that I wanted to save, to include in this book. I made a 60 page book of all of her Kindergarten artwork, approximately 120 pieces of her artwork, via OnceUpon, and I selected the matte paper option. The book turned out well, it is simple in design, and not as expensive to print as compared to other places where you can make books.

The best part is—I printed one of these books for Alex, and she loves looking at her art via this book, and it is also a way to encourage her to keep making her beautiful art, which she loves to make, daily—she is very creative! The arts are really important, and we hope to keep fostering this love within Alex. I hope to continue to make yearly books of her artwork as a way of preserving her artworks! Here are Alex’s previous artwork books, which you can view here and here. I am still making our family yearbooks, and I am a few years behind due to my recently released book, so I will have to find a way to catch up, as these books are so meaningful to have and to share with your family!

Happy Heart Day!

Happy Heart Day! We are celebrating Valentine’s Day today and over the weekend, with Alex and Victory! Alex had quite the Valentine’s Day party at her school, along with a swim team Valentine’s party tonight! This weekend, we are celebrating with a dinner at one of our favorite restaurants! Alex and Victory are quite the pair! As you can see via the image below, my girls adore each other, and they are the perfect pair! I am so grateful for our beautiful girls, and I am so grateful to be their Mama! Alex loved making valentine cards and gifts for her friends and family–she is so incredibly thoughtful! Of course, Victory is integral to any family celebration!

Despite everything that is going on in our world, I hope you have a Happy Heart Day!

Thirteen Year Blogiversary!

Today is the thirteen-year Blogiversary of the blog!  I cannot believe it! It is extremely difficult to believe that thirteen years has already passed by so quickly!  The time moves so quickly, these days, and I often wonder where the time goes? Many things have changed, but some things remain the same, fortunately. I am grateful for this little space here.

If it were not for our beloved Biscuit, I am not sure I would have ever started blogging and I know that I would not have started my long-term photography project turned into a published book: ABANDONED: Chronicling the Journeys of Once-Forsaken Dogs, which was released into the world this past fall, for which Biscuit and Victory were my inspiration.  Biscuit was such a blessing and gift to us. Biscuit permanently changed our lives in so many positive ways and he sent us our precious little rescue sheltie, Victory, who we adore and love, shown below! And, coincidentally, Victory is the same age (we suspect, as she is a rescue dog) as the blog!

Thank you for reading this blog for however long or short you have been visiting!  I truly enjoy creating content for the blog to share with all of you, and I hope that you continue to enjoy visiting and reading the blog!

Thank you so very much!

Mantra for 2025

I hope you had a nice Holiday! We visited with family, we had some down time with our girls, and we all got some sleep and rest, which was so nice, and we have had a couple snow days! And, I cannot believe our little girl is turning six-and-a-half-years-old next week! She is growing in every way and she loves learning, she is incredibly creative, and she is curious about everything, which I hope never ceases! Our fur girl, Victory, is doing well, too, thankfully!

2024 was a very intense year, which included putting my first book, ABANDONED: Chronicling the Journeys of Once-Forsaken Dogs, into the world, which was no small or easy feat, for sure! In the past, I have chosen a word for the year. This year, coming off a very intense year, I have decided that I am going to concentrate on what is in front of me, work hard, and have fun! This idea came from a recent memoir entitled, Be Ready When the Luck Happens: A Memoir, which I loved. Maybe a mantra or a word, an intention will work for you; I think it is best to embrace the new year in some way that works for you! So, I am doing things a little differently this year!

Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Happy Pawlidays!

“No animal I know of can consistently be more of a friend and companion than a dog.” —Stanley Leinwall

Happy Pawlidays! I wanted to thank you so very much for checking in over the past year — I am very grateful. It has been an exciting year for us!

Below is the front of our Pawliday card (the back of our card containing text is not pictured), along with our matching envelopes using little photo seals of our beautiful girls, Alex and Victory! And, unfortunately, custom stamps are still no longer permitted by the Post Office, but I used beautiful Ansel Adams stamps. (You can view our previous Pawliday cards: hereherehereherehereherehereherehereherehere, and here). Sending our Pawliday card is one of my favorite parts of the Holiday season! This is my way of sharing our Pawliday card with you. It has been an exciting year and we have so much to be grateful for. Thank you for reading this blog for however long or short you have been reading. I sincerely enjoy creating content for the blog to share with you.

I will be taking a break from the blog to enjoy some down time with family, and I plan to be back to the blog sometime early next year. Meanwhile, if you are in a blog-reading mood, you are warmly invited to visit the archives — the links are shown below.  Thank you for your support with my recently released book:  ABANDONED: Chronicling the Journeys of Once-Forsaken Dogs! It’s been an incredible journey! Warmest wishes to you for a safe and Happy Holidays!

Christmas Time: Visiting Santa

We recently took Alex and  Victory to visit Santa, an annual tradition! All went well with both of our girls during their Santa visit, and Alex shared the few items, with Santa, that she would like him to bring her this Christmas!

Victory, our beautiful fur girl, did very well, like always! This is Victory’s ninth time visiting Santa and Alex’s fifth time visiting Santa! You can see Victory’s previous trips to visit Santa: hereherehereherehereherehere, and here. This is the only Santa in our area that welcomes both of our girls, while also allowing me to take photographs! Victory wore her candy cane sweater, and Alex wore a dark green dress.  All proceeds from visiting Santa are donated to a local dog rescue, a very good cause near and dear to our hearts, as Biscuit and Victory are rescues.  If you are interested, be sure to check with and visit your local pet stores to see if there is a Santa in your area that specializes in furry family members!

A few images from Victory’s and Alex’s fifth visit together with Santa are shown below, along with images of Victory with Santa from the previous seven visits, excluding 2020 and 2021, due to COVID-19. The time really does fly by too quickly!  We are so grateful for our fur girl, Victory!

Below are images from Victory’s ninth visits to see Santa: 2014 – 2024 (excluding 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, sadly).

The girls’ visits to see Santa in 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024.

Pictured below is Alex in front of our Christmas tree in 2020; and Alex in front of my parents’ Christmas tree during 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. We truly missed seeing Santa in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

And, after seeing Santa, Alex and Victory made hand print and paw print ornaments at the pottery shop, shown below! It was so much fun, and a wonderful, unique keepsake for our girls! You can see last year’s hand print and paw print ornaments here.

Below is a video from Alex’s recent Christmas program at school.

Victory: A Birthday Celebration — 13 years

October 12, marked eleven years since we adopted our sweet dear little Victory!  The time is going by much too quickly!  We decided to make October 12 Victory’s birthday — the day we went to Michigan and adopted our sweet fur girl. (This post is a month late due to the release my new book, ABANDONED: Chronicling the Journeys of Once-Forsaken Dogs.)

As such, we recently celebrated Victory’s birthday marking her eleventh year with us since her adoption!  This also marks seven years celebrating as a ‘big sister’ to Alex!  This year, for Victory’s birthday, we did a personalized pink and coral themed birthday! (As shown below, last year, we did a personalized pastel theme; two years ago, we did a personalized fall theme and pastel theme; three years ago personalized theme and a pastel theme; four years ago pink theme with gold accent; five years we did a pastel rainbow theme with a silver accent; six years ago we did pastel theme with a gold and silver accent; seven years ago we did a gold and champagne theme; eight years ago we did a light pink and gold themed birthday; nine years ago we did a pink themed birthday; and ten years ago, we did rainbow themed birthday for Victory!)  For this double-digit birthday, we had another cake made with Victory’s likeness — Victory reading my newly released book, Abandoned: Chronicling the Journeys of Once-Forsaken Dogs! It turned out beautifully! We also purchased some fun decorations and balloons, along with a coral sweater for Victory, a tradition, in honor of her birthday!  Victory also enjoyed a steak prepared by Doug, along with her very own cupcake (with no icing, of course!) Victory looked absolutely adorable and beautiful on her birthday, as always, shown below!  This is the seventh birthday that Victory celebrated with her sidekick, Alex! It is wonderful to witness their relationship beautiful relationship; Alex adores her fur sister, and I think the feeling is mutual! Alex loves giving Victory treats and hugs! Victory had a fun birthday and she truly enjoyed being over fed and the center of attention! I sincerely believe Victory knows her birthdays are all about her!

We are truly the lucky ones to share our lives with this wonderful, loyal, and loving being. Victory has been such a source of comfort to us all. Victory has also fully embraced her ‘big sister’ role!  Victory is very attuned to her little sister and loves to greet Alex in the mornings and evenings!  It melts our hearts!  Victory continues to join us evening for play time and story time, in addition to all meals!  We also do our best to keep Victory fully integrated in our trips and outings as well, and we had a fun fall together with many outings together!  We are so very grateful and thankful for our Victory.  She means the world to us and we love her very much.

For Victory’s birthday, we gave her: a blanket; an assortment of toys that Alex picked out; assorted treats; and a new coral sweater! And, my parents gifted their grand puppy, Victory, an Orvis gift card! Additionally, Alex also made some art for Victory, along with a special card!

(All birthday decorations are via Sweet Lulu and Meri Meri.)

A look back at Victory’s birthday celebrations over the years…

Here is a look back at Victory on her birthdays!

If you are considering getting a dog, I hope that you consider adopting a rescue or shelter dog.  There are so many dogs in need of a good, loving home, especially now, with the dog overpopulation crisis. As shown below, Victory, a rescue, has changed so much physically and emotionally over the years since we adopted her, pictured on the left (image from Victory’s foster mom via the Michigan Sheltie Rescue).  You really can save a dog’s life, while simultaneously enriching your own life/lives, which is a win-win for everyone. We cannot imagine not having a rescue dog in our lives!
